In 2017 when Motor Trend proclaimed the Ferrari 488 as the “Best Driver’s Car” it was just one of many awards this Ferrari had already achieved. Top Gear magazine named it “The Supercar of the Year” even though the 488 was competing with heady competition in the performance field. Distinguished as the first Ferrari offered since the epic F40 featuring a mid-engine design housing a twin turbocharged V8, the immediate comparisons were certainly obvious, but the two cars could not have been more radically different.
The remarkable performance, 0-60 in 3.0 seconds and a quarter mile time of 10.45 seconds with a top speed of 205 mph, were enough to impress even experts familiar with cars of this stature. But it was the combination of performance and exceptional ease of use that truly vaulted the 488 into a league of its own. With its 661hp engine and unbeatable stability, the Ferrari 488 has become quite simply, the best, most technically balanced and drivable Ferrari road car ever built.
Designed to take advantage of aerodynamics leveraging unique high volume airflow areas that increase downforce, cool internal systems, and efficiently push out troublesome turbulent air, the 488 uses a range of spoilers, intakes, and tunnels to regulate air flow and positively control downforce. Underbody vortex generators, rear-end diffusers, and diverted split side air chambers aiding turbo cooling perform careful air management in a delicate balance of air management that provides added performance, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced stability. Even the door handles cleverly feature a design specifically shaped to properly divert air.
The 488 Spider features a folding top that raises and lowers under power assist, transforming the completely closed car into a fully open convertible in a matter of seconds. For added enjoyment, the roof can stay in the up position, but the rear window can be fully lowered so that glorious mid-engine sounds can be enjoyed from the sealed cabin without inviting excessive exterior elements into the cabin. Cleverly designed not only for performance, the 488 features a surprisingly roomy front trunk that allows space for more than weekend luggage as well as a nicely detailed plaque featuring all the options ordered on a particular car.
