A relentless search for better, more creative ways to portray brands has enabled Geoff Edwards to bypass such challenges as being a minority in a largely white, male industry. He sees his experience as a powerful model for young talent. Diligence, quality work and a passion to tell stories through art and fantasy trump obstacles. His ads feature moving, often lyrical combinations of images, language and music.
"I'm an idealist," Edwards says. "I saw an industry that would give me the opportunity to tell stories on a grand scale. I won't say that there haven't been challenges, but I haven't let them be a deterrent," Edwards says.
Over his 25-year career, Edwards has done award-winning work for some of the world's most prominent brands—Budweiser, Gatorade, McDonald's and Xbox, among others—at some of the most prominent creative agencies—Chiat\Day, JWT and DDB Chicago. And his desire for a leaner, more nimble business model led him to start Dojo with partner Mauro Alencar in 2009. The company has grown from a table at a local Peete's Coffee Shop to 35 people.
Personal relationships and a desire to keep learning and have fun drive Edwards' creativity. As his partner Alencar notes, "Geoff takes time to talk to people and listen to them. If we walk 100 meters (at an event), I meet five people I know and he meets 35."
