A billionaire-backed project promised humanity could reach another star within a single lifetime.
The idea sounded impossible. Fire a tiny spacecraft toward Alpha Centauri at 20% the speed of light using a giant laser array powerful enough to rival entire countries.
But there was one problem nobody could solve. The spacecraft couldn’t stay stable.
At those speeds, even the smallest wobble would instantly send the craft spinning off the laser beam and vaporize it before onboard computers could react.
Software wasn’t fast enough, thrusters weren’t fast enough, physics itself became the enemy.
Then a group of doctoral students in Texas built something bizarre.
A microscopic “metajet” made from an ultra-thin metasurface that has no engine, no fuel, no moving parts, and no onboard AI.
Instead, the material itself bends light in a way that automatically keeps the craft centered on the beam, correcting instability without needing a computer to think first.
The original Breakthrough Starshot project spent years fighting a problem that may have been impossible with conventional engineering. But this tiny piece of silicon may have accidentally revealed the first real path toward interstellar travel.
For the first time, getting to another star no longer sounds completely insane.
