King Ludwig II of Bavaria is best known for building Neuschwanstein, the castle in the Bavarian Alps that was never completed. But he spent significant parts of his life in two other castles: Hohenschwangau and Linderhof. He grew up in the relatively modest Hohenschwangau, which is filled with dark wood and painted scenes of hunting. As a young man, he held lavish parties at the Rococo-styled Linderhof, where guests could enjoy boat rides in the Venus Grotto and relax in the Moorish Kiosk.
