First things first: Check storage breakdown
Go to the Apple menu – About This Mac – Storage to see which categories (apps, photos, system data, etc.) are taking up the most space. This will give you a clear starting point.
🗂️ Clear space to get your Mac ready for macOS 26:
1. Restart your Mac
Go to the Apple menu – Restart.
2. Remove system junk

3. Delete old iOS backups
Connect your iPhone to your Mac and select your device in Finder. Click Manage Backups to review and remove old backup files.
4. Find duplicates
Open Finder and next to the search bar, select the three dots – Show Search Criteria. At the top, change Kind to Other…, then select File Size. Set it to is greater than and type 1000 MB (1 GB).
5. Remove Time Machine snapshots
Run these commands in Terminal:
tmutil listlocalsnapshots /
sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots [snapshotname]
