The term “Mystery theme” is coined by the LOST fandom. Composer Michael Giacchino himself refers to it as “the spirit of the island”. Indeed, the five-note melody (often played on harp) largely plays during moments of mystery, tension, fear and confusion. It's one of the most prominent themes featured on the show, appearing in at least 70 scenes, evolving as the story progresses and reaching a fittingly emotional resolution near the series finale. Within the show's universe, the theme's melody is used as the background music for several Dharma Initiative “Orientation” videos. It also features in the show's “End Title”.

Michael Giacchino considers himself a storyteller first and a musician second. On LOST, his soundtrack doesn't just suit the story of the show - it adds to it. By attaching certain scenes to established characters, locations, emotions and events through his music, Giacchino provides additional context and meaning to what's happening on screen. This way, understanding Giacchino's rich collection of themes and leitmotifs is another way to further appreciate the score, as well as the show in general.
