![3 Individual Training Drills for Midfielders
In todays video, well show you 3 great midfielder drills to improve your aerial ball control, change of direction, speed dribbling, short passes and long passes.
00:00 Intro
00:10 Change of Direction
01:15 Forward Pass
02:17 Aerial Pass
For Exercise 1, we’ll be working on our aerial ball control, a quick change of direction and speed dribbling. To setup the drill, use 4 cones to make a 5x5 box and 2 cones on the outsides about 10 yards away. To execute, juggle the football ball a few times then kick up above your head. Control the aerial ball outside the box towards the cone, then quickly turn away and dribble back with speed. Stop the soccer ball in the box and repeat in the opposite direction. With this exercise, it’s important to focus on the efficiency and speed of execution. Technically focus on a clean directional first touch when controlling the aerial ball and an explosive change of direction as you turn away from the cone.
For Exercise 2, we’ll be working on our aerial control again, but now incorporating a sharp forward pass on the ground. To set-up the drill, we’ll add two small goals or targets placed about 15 yards away from our box. We’ll again start by juggling the soccer ball and controlling a high aerial ball outside of the box, then quickly look up and play a firm pass on the ground into a target. Repeat the exercise again going in the opposite direction and passing with the opposite foot. With this exercise focus on taking a good first touch with the aerial ball, and breaking lines with an accurate firm pass on the ground. Be sure to use proper technique with the inside of your foot and follow through the ball to generate enough power.
For Exercise 3, we’ll progress to playing a long forward pass in the air. For the set-up we’ll need a goal or a target placed about 30 yards away from our box. Start the sequence with an aerial control again, then look up and play a long driven forward pass in the air into the target or goal. Repeat the exercise going in the opposite direction and passing the ball with the opposite foot. With this exercise you want to focus on proper technique and the weight of the long pass. Ideally the ball should be driven into the target with a good amount of backspin.
