SOFLES – Compendium Ironlak 2020-03-05 | In the year 2000, a young SOFLES started painting graffiti in his hometown of Brisbane, Australia. Through putting in hours upon hours of work, on walls, trains, and his blackbook inside the garige (garage), he quickly rose to global prominence as a graffiti writer, illustrator, and muralist. Being versatile in his style and approach, and one of the fastest painters I’ve ever seen, has helped with producing a huge volume of work.SOFLES ‘Compendium’ is a culmination of his twenty years as an artist and the first major study of his work. Produced by Juddy Roller, and hosted at the Benalla Art Gallery in regional Victoria, the exhibition reveals never before seen photographs and footage from the archives, a sculpture installation built by Drapl, sketchbooks on display, and brand-new canvas, and site-specific, paintings.Reflecting on two decades as an artist, SOFLES shares his gratitude: “It’s been a long and arduous journey, and really fun. I’ve got to meet some amazing people along the way, and it’s opened the world up to me, giving me the opportunity to visit a lot of places around the world.”What’s next? “Adding some more arsenal to the repertoire. TAT2SHAE – ‘Rx in Wonderland’ Ironlak 2020-02-19 | We just stumbled upon this short video from 2018 of Los Angeles-based illustrator 2SHAE’s studio process while working on his ‘Rx in Wonderland’ illustration for a now sold out print release. Using our Ironlak Technical Drawing Pens and Permanent Markers, 2SHAE dreams up a wild concoction of Alice in Wonderland themed artwork, featuring classic characters The Mad Hatter with a face of pills, and The White Rabbit gone crazy. That’s right folks, even in black and white, 2SHAE’s version manages to be more tripped out than the original. House of Death | Miami Art Basel Graffiti 2019 – Part One Ironlak 2020-02-01 | We didn’t have anything official planned for the chaos that is Art Basel last year, so we did the reach out to a bunch of friends to see if anyone was making the trip to Miami regardless. Turns out a handful of writers we knew were heading out, so we packed some boxes of paint, and shipped them out to Florida ahead of the festivities.Miami is always a good time, and during Basel, although it’s a little crazy, with everyone tripping over each other for real estate, it’s worth it for the spectacle and good times. Yard Master – The Lost Tapes Ironlak 2020-01-23 | In 2016, we embarked upon another USA adventure. Bags were packed, and we were on the hunt for big metal giants. Multiple cities, multiple spots, many empty spray cans, resulting in many freight trains with fresh new paint jobs, and many sunrises seen – usually washing down a cold night of painting with Waffle House grease and cold beer for breakfast. “Sleep, tankers, hoppers, sleep… and at some point tomorrow, chicken.”We were in for some freezing nights, and the journey went down as planned. An awesome trip. Then, we lost the footage! So many hours of painting captured, lost forever due to a corrupted hard drive. We brought in the ‘experts’, aka a dude TUESY found in the yellow pages, and months later he couldn’t put Humpty back together again. The action was gone. Fast forward to 2019 and we discovered a backup of SOME of the footage, hidden away in a weird folder on a different hard drive, stashed in a moment of sleep-deprived delirium and paranoia. Thanks to this lucky discovery, we present ‘The Lost Tapes’, covering the first couple days of our road trip, including one of the best spots. Sure, we can’t show you the moment things got a little off-plan, and we got stuck hiding in a swamp, worried about alligators, only to be eaten alive by mosquitos, but we’ll take what we can get. PHIBS & PORNO – Freestyle Studio Session Ironlak 2020-01-20 | “The canvas we did is truly just a freestyle session of lettering and elements, which was almost a meditation and a fun collab.”PHIBS and PORNO join forces to create a collaborative canvas at their studio in Melbourne. Working over a few late arvo sessions, the approach was to have a mish-mash jam with no real plan, to keep things very spontaneous, which is how they like to work, layering up different elements, using spray paint, stencils, paintbrush, and Ironlak Pump Action Paint Markers.“It’s more about being free and being able to use as many different mediums as possible.” –PHIBS“Using some cut masks for base fills of the pieces, we were then able to keep layering and layering with markers and paint. I guess the final point was looking for balance, so it wasn’t too cooked by the time we finished! I can get a bit obsessed with symmetry, and when I paint with PHIBS he always makes me step outside that zone. Ironlak BBQ Burners – Sydney Ironlak 2020-01-08 | Our final Ironlak BBQ Burners event for 2019 was in good-old Sydney town. We love Sydney, so it’s always good to show love to Sydney. BBQ Burners is about getting a handful of writers together for a chill day of painting, with beers on ice, and food on the barbie, and Sydney was no different. Our day started with a 5am flight outta Brissy – TUES, REALS, and YESMA caught the early bird, landed in SYD and took a cab straight to the park, ready for action.REALSY and the boss linked up with 20 or so Sydney-based writers, while TUESY held down the BBQ in the sunshine, cooking up a feed, with Mik from 567 King on deck “choppin’ onions and talkin’ shit.” Our man FESTE was a huge help in organising the wall and the line-up, ahead of time which made the day flow nicely.All in all, it was a good day, we got about five cartons deep and there were randos drinking wine with cheese and bickies, “which was a bit weird.”Thanks to all the writers in Sydney for their support over the years. Ironlak BBQ Burners – Perth Ironlak 2019-12-18 | As Australia hits record heat temperatures this week, it definitely makes us glad that we jumped across to Perth early with some September Spring in our steps, ahead of this summer-heat-monstrosity that we’re facing now! Spring, summer, or winter though – the Western Australian’s were delivering the heat regardless (insert mailman pun here – something, something, rain, hail, or shine). To set the tone, we strapped REALS and BASIX to a Boeing, and bon voyaged their arses all the way to the other side of the country. Day one saw the travelers jump straight into The Butcher Shop to grab some sprays, and then over to the wall in Northbridge to rock a tidy two-namer. The local crew put in a good effort to look after us, hanging tight all day. We are grateful for that. Day two, it was time for the officially, official; Ironlak BBQ Burners – Perth event. After scooping the Lak, we pulled up at a local youth centre for the BBQ event. REALS and BASIX were painting either side of local old school king PROMISE, in addition, 10-15 local writers were jamming right the way around the building. It was a hostile takeover – the car park, the skate ramp – the entire circumference of the compound got sprayed. A marvelous day was had, and the Lak crew kicked on for some beers in the car park afterward. Being Perth, I’m sure someone probably whipped out a mini speaker for an impromptu car park boogie at some point. One thing’s for sure, return flights were 100% missed! The B-Line Killers – Part Two Ironlak 2019-12-12 | Cop the rewind and then buckle in for part two of ‘The B-Line Killers’ featuring Brisbane’s infamous TBK Crew. To rub the concept into your brain muscle a little more – eight graffiti writers from TBK painted four separate walls across Brizzy City. Each wall was a two-name join-up, with all four walls forming like Voltron for the ultimate eight-name stitcher. Eight writers. Four locations. One join-up. Ya dig? It’s as Bore explained: “With measurements and a plan to be able to stitch up the photos of four joints into one bangin’ join-up. Fingers crossed anyway.” Lucky those fingers were crossed. After a successful debut event in Caringbah in 2018, the event returned November 2019 – featuring 40 artists gracing 40 walls in the beachside suburb Cronulla.With the part two freshly wrapped, and the official recap coming soon, we thought we’d zero in on one wall. THAT KID & PUDL are Sydney-based artists who traditionally place emphasis on letterforms. Ironlak BBQ Burners – Townsville Ironlak 2019-11-07 | As we continue with our coverage of the Ironlak BBQ Burners series, we hog-tie TUES and MEKS, and head deep-north to, what was actually, our first BBQ destination of the year – Townsville, North Queensland.It’s a small scene in TSV and we had a fun one linking with the locals to spruce up the CRE8IVE SK8 car park wall behind the shop. Ado from CRE8IVE has been a big supporter of action sports and graffiti culture in the ’ville, and of us at Lak. In-fact CRE8IVE SK8 was one of the first-ever stockists of Ironlak when we first started in the early 2000s. This day was no different – Ado turned on the hospitality for all in attendance, going all-in on one of the most epic BBQ feeds we’ve had to date – including 18-hour slow-cooked brisket from Serial Grillers. There were 15 writers in attendance, and the day’s festivities featured a Hip Hop gig with DJs all arvo, and a performance from local crew Townsvillains. It made for a bit of a party vibe. A Day with SKARY Ironlak 2019-10-31 | SKARY is a graffiti writer and tattooer from the east coast of Australia. He’s lived all over and currently calls Sydney city home. Recently he was in Brisbane visiting friends and doing a guest spot at Seventh Circle Tattoo in Woolloongabba. We rode shotgun to give you a little insight into his process. Here’s a hint; it sometimes involves the cold amber stuff. He’s been doing graffiti for most of his life. Starting with tagging at age 12 in the nineties and getting his first piece done around 2001. After constantly admiring the more permanent artform of tattooing from afar, a little over six years ago, SKARY got serious with his tattoo gun and he’s been buzzing away ever since. He explains: “I’ve always been obsessed with tattoos, especially traditional tattoos. I always like the look – seeing dudes like Bon Scott wear them sooooo well. Jess Cochrane – Ironlak Studio Ironlak 2018-10-04 | Sydney based visual artist Jess Cochrane made a mess inside the Ironlak Studio in Brisbane, Australia.The work of Jess Cochrane is well outside of the typical for Ironlak – her message is distinctive, unapologetic, and seeks to highlight the problems caused by an industry that force feeds the masses with perfection. “We're constantly bombarded with imagery; advertising and we're conditioned to think and feel a certain way“, says Jess – attempting to place the viewer of her work into an introspective bind and posing the question: “Is it really ugly? or is it beautiful because you've pushed it?”. Equipped with a backpack, a Lak stash and his beloved beach ball, we followed this merry man through his travels in Brisbane and Byron, getting to know his cheerful style and quirky composition.If you’re not yet familiar with the work of MUCHOS, this video will give you some insight into the day to day influences of his style, and a look into the nuances of his inspiration - sugar, spice and everything nice. “I like to keep things as stress free as possible and focus on the good things around me. That's how I like to approach my paintings.”MUCHOS’ trip was anchored by his debut solo exhibition, ‘STACKED’ hosted by The Culprit Cub, which explored the ideas of form, composition and balance in day-to-day life. Through the symbolism of seemingly ordinary objects featuring in his murals and artworks, (yeah, we’re back on the beach ball) MUCHOS uses his cheerful colour pallet and creative composition across multiple mediums to express a ‘balancing act’ of objects that exist in harmony, despite their unusual positions and differences.
