The Media Hoarder | 1996 Panasonic DVD Demonstration clip- Beverly Hills (5.1 Dolby Digital) @TheMediaHoarder | Uploaded April 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
One of 4 demo video clips with music in 5.1 Dolby Digital from the very first DVD most people ever saw. This looks like it was shot in early hi-def and then downscaled to 480 in 4x3 letterbox, nothing on this disc is in 16x9. I had to laugh at how these segments had almost no movement at all, as that was what caused the most compression artifacts.
This disc looked awful in the stores; the movie clips were from Twister (which looked especially bad with everything going on in that), Free Willy, Goldeneye and Thumbelina. At home with proper settings it still looks decent however, but at the time it really didn't sell me on the format which the industry had already decided was going to kill off laserdisc regardless.
