King Rose Archives | 1991 Indy 500 Pace Car Official Press Event — The Viper RT/10 @KingRoseArchives | Uploaded April 2023 | Updated October 2024, 5 hours ago.
In 1991 The Indy 500 was celebrating its 75th anniversary, and Dodge needed to move fast in order to come up with an All-American "solution" for the 1991 pace car. The Dodge Stealth was originally announced as the official Indy 500 pace car, after all, the Dodge Stealth was manufactured by Mitsubishi and as it turned out the United Auto Workers (UAW) were extremely vocal when criticizing Dodge's decision to make the Dodge Stealth the pace car for "America's race." Coincidentally, it also didn't help that 1991 was the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Dodge wisely chose to replace the Stealth with a prototype of its newest Mopar muscle car, the Viper RT/10. Although it wasn't scheduled to hit dealer showrooms until late in 1992, Dodge managed to churn out a pre-production Viper RT/10 in time to pace the 1991 Indy 500 race.
Carroll Shelby, the legendary race car driver, car designer, motorhead, and performance consultant for Dodge, presented the Dodge Viper RT/10 at this official press event for the 1991 Indy 500 and drove it for the opening race. We would like to be so bold as to say that America couldn't prouder!
