Can a £1.99 plant pot saucer make a good bird bath? During the recent heatwave, I filled one with water, added a few rocks, and placed it in a shady spot in the garden. It wasn't long before the local birds discovered it.
A European Robin became a regular visitor, even using my camera as a favourite singing perch. Before long, it seemed to treat the little bird bath as its own, chasing away other birds. Fortunately, there were still plenty of opportunities for other visitors, including a Eurasian Wren and a Common Wood Pigeon.
Although this simple ground bird bath proved very popular, I'll be moving it to a more open location to give birds a better view of approaching predators.
