Since 1887 the Oldham Coliseum Theatre has admirably served the local community as a theatre, cinema and music hall.
Originally the venue was envisaged to serve as a circus and one of its claims to fame is an early appearance by Charlie Chaplin, all the way through to cast members of Coronation Street past, present and future.

In 1981, Joan Bakewell visited Fairbottom Street and spoke to director Kenneth Alan Taylor, actors and locals about the importance of the theatre to the community, the next generation of theatre goers and giving contemporary plays a chance, such as the UK premiere of Martin Sherman's Cracks.

Clip taken from Newsnight, originally broadcast on BBC Two, Monday 12 October, 1981.
