Thirty kilometres north of Viedma, at three in the morning on 23 September 1978, Chilean driver Carlos Acevedo, at the wheel of a Citroën GS, was trying to cover the last thousand kilometres that separated him from the finish line of the gruelling Vuelta a la América del Sur.

At his side was his co-driver, Miguel Ángel Moya, of the same nationality. At that moment Acevedo saw a light in the rear-view mirror, which he took for the headlights of another car and moved to let him pass. But that light came closer and closer, and what happened next turned out to be the strangest story ever told about that race.

The vehicle started to elevate from the ground and the drivers claimed to have been “taken” onboard of a UFO and placed further with their car for about 70 kilometers, to the outskirts of Pedro Luro, without them remembering much.

To this day, this remains an unsolved mystery.
