Trevor Philpott meets two of the most detested men in Britain. Men who inspire such fervid hatred that sweet, elderly ladies are moved to viciously attack them with hairpins and handbags. Men whose entire lives seem to be soundtracked by a raucous cacophony of boos and heckles. Men who everybody wants to see taking a good beating.

The Klondyke Brothers, Bill and Jake, are professional wrestlers, professional heels, professional villains. According to the notes in the wrestling programme, they were born in the toughest, farthest-flung corner of Alaska. They are certainly the most massive and probably the most monstrous pair of entertainers treading the boards. Between them they weigh 56 stone, and every ounce of it is villainous.

What is it like to earn your living by being hated by ordinarily respectable, law-abiding people?
