Historians Peniel Joseph and Professor Kathleen Cleaver talked about civil rights and race relations as part of C-SPAN's series "1968: America in Turmoil." Professor Cleaver is a former Black Panther Party communications secretary and the former spouse of author and political activist Eldridge Cleaver. Topics included Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign and his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee; the Black Power movement; and the Kerner Commission report. The program began with an April 4, 1968, clip of former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite announcing that Dr. King had been shot and killed.
