Today, we’re taking a look at my View-Master collection, which spans from the late 1940s to the 1980s. And yes, that's 9 year old Jodie Foster in 1971 when she appeared in the GAF View-Master commercial with Henry Fonda.
My collection includes a Sawyer's View-Master Model C, produced between 1946 and 1955. I believe I have around 100 reels from the late '40s and '50s. I also own two GAF View-Master Model G devices, produced between 1959 and 1977. I think I have a little over 100 reels from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. View-Master is the trademark name of a line of special-format stereoscopes and corresponding View-Master "reels", which are thin cardboard disks containing seven Stereoscopic 3-D pairs of small transparent color photographs on film. It was originally manufactured and sold by Sawyer's.
The View-Master system was introduced in 1939, four years after the advent of Kodachrome color film made the use of small, high-quality photographic color images practical. Tourist attraction and travel views predominated in View-Master's early lists of reels, most of which were meant to be of interest to users of all ages. Most current View-Master reels are intended for children.
VIEW-MASTER MODEL C:
The View-Master Model C was produced between 1946 and 1955. It was made from bakelite and was the first viewer to have a slot into which the reels were placed for viewing. The viewer was very robustly constructed and many survive in almost new condition to this day. For the common black, non-outlined patent variant, this is reflected in their very low price and their easy availability. Brown variants are much more scarce and so they command a considerably higher price, as do early black models with an outlined patent information block.
A light attachment was produced for this viewer from 1950 until the end of the Model C's life in 1955. The Model C originally retailed for $2.00. Whilst it was mainly made in black, there are also brown, dark brown, black with brown speckles and two-tone brown versions available.
Some viewers can be identified as an early model because the patent information was outlined, whereas, later models were not. The Model C viewer was sold concurrently with Model B viewers between 1946 and 1948, at which point sales of the Model B were finally stopped.
VIEW-MASTER MODEL G:
The View-Master Model G was produced between 1959 and 1977. It was made from lightweight plastic. Because of its long production history, there are many different variations of this model. During the time that this viewer was in production the company ownership switched from Sawyers to GAF. The red, white and blue viewer came in a tub, together with reels, to mark the 1976 US Bicentennial Anniversary.
