18100 was a bold leap in technology. Ordered by the Great Western Railway in the early 1940's the Gas Turbine Prototype was more like a jet engine than a diesel and was even fuelled by aviation kerosene.
It went on to have a second life as a pioneering AC electric for trialling the West Coast Mainline Electrification program in the late 1950's.

Part 1 covers the loco in its Gas Turbine form as 18100 on the Western Region, alongside Hall and Castle Class steam locomotives.
Part 2 looks at the loco on trial on the Midland Region after conversion to an AC Electric. Steam was still supreme at this time so look out for Black 5's and 9F's.
