Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and bandleader born on April 29, 1899, in Washington, D.C. He was a prominent figure in jazz music during the 20th century and is considered one of the most significant composers and performers in the genre's history. Ellington's parents were James Edward Ellington and Daisy Kennedy Ellington, and he grew up in a middle-class family in Washington, D.C. His parents encouraged him to study piano, and he began playing professionally at the age of 17. Ellington moved to New York City in the early 1920s, where he formed a band and began playing at various clubs and venues. In 1927, he signed a contract with RCA Victor and recorded several hit songs, including "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" and "Black and Tan Fantasy." Over the next several decades, Ellington and his band, known as the Duke Ellington Orchestra, became one of the most popular and successful jazz groups in the world. They performed in venues ranging from dance halls to concert halls and even appeared in several films. Ellington was known for his distinctive style of composing and arranging, which blended elements of jazz, swing, and classical music. He wrote over 1,000 compositions throughout his career, including "Take the A Train," "Mood Indigo," and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." In addition to his musical accomplishments, Ellington was also an advocate for civil rights and used his platform to promote racial equality. He performed at numerous benefit concerts and spoke out against segregation and discrimination. Ellington received numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He died on May 24, 1974, in New York City, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century.
Note: The first 78 RPM record came into existence around 1894, and in 1912 the Gramophone Company established 78 rotations per minute as their recording standard. The production of shellac records continued throughout the 78 rpm era, with "non-breakable" 78 rpm vinyl records being introduced in the 1940s. The popularity of the 33 1/3 rpm "Long Play" record, initially released in 1948, caused the 78 rpm record to become obsolete before the end of the 1950s. As these 78 rpm recordings are quite old, they may contain derogatory language and/or negative stereotypes. It is important to evaluate such recordings within their historical context and consider them as a reflection of the attitudes prevalent at the time.
