The 1921 Alabama half dollar is one of the scarcer commemorative coins. This coin was designed by Laura Fraser. The obverse of the coin depicts the Alabama governors Wyatt Bibb & Thomas Kilby. Wyatt Bibb was the first governor of Alabama. Thomas Kilby was governor of Alabama when this coin was issued. The Alabama half dollar is the first US coin to depict a living person, Thomas Kilby. The reverse depicts an eagle perched on a shield. This coin has two varieties: "2X2" & "Plain." The "2X2" variety has the legend 2X2 on the obverse. The "Plain" variety lacks the 2X2 inscriptions. My half dollar is the "Plain" variety. The "Plain" variety has a mintage of 59,000. The "2X2" variety has a mintage of 6,000.
