This was our Open Research Institutes meeting on May 19th where we discussed recent progress and ongoing work on various projects. Aaron reported on OpenCPI work, including adding carrier offset functionality to the Charlie implementation of Opulent Voice and plans to work on channelizer development. Michelle provided extensive updates on the satellite channelizer project for Haifuraiya, detailing the implementation of a multi-rate channelizer in VHDL, successful test bench results, and progress toward integrating it with the ZCU102 reference design using Yocto-based builds. Paul discussed remote labs work involving VM rebuilding on ChocoCat with dedicated hardware pass-through NVMe drives, and resolved audio timing issues with Opulent Voice on M1 MacBooks by switching to a different sound card. The team also discussed plans for demonstrating their work at the upcoming Friedrichshafen HAMRADIO 2026 conference, potentially using video demonstrations instead of bringing fragile hardware due to export control concerns with the Xilinx equipment. Adrian joined late to discuss potential use of the Apple Valley DSS telescope for the EVE moon bounce experiment and shared information about the upcoming Apophis asteroid passage in December, which could present opportunities for radar observations and signal tracking experiments.
Thank you to everyone helping us do ambitious things!
