Construction photographs of the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition have appeared in the last two years from the Chicago Public Library archives. Taken by photographer Charles Dudley Arnold, these images document the building of the Chicago World’s Fair from 1891 to 1893.
The fair covered 690 acres with 197 buildings and welcomed over 27 million visitors, introducing innovations like the first Ferris Wheel and the famous White City. Official records say the buildings were temporary wooden structures covered in “staff” plaster—but some details raise questions about their foundations and construction.
