What are the best apples for eating and cooking? Taste test of heirloom and new apple varieties, to find which apples are the best in the world. When selecting apple varieties for the home orchard, it’s good to choose which trees to grow carefully. There are thousands of apple varieties, not just the usual fuji, pink lady, honeycrisp, granny smith, Gala and other commercial varieties. Many apples have unique flavors and different seasons. I have over 200 varieties of apples growing on my homestead to find out which types of apples are the most delicious and best for eating, storing, cooking, canning, drying, preserving, sauce, pie etc. I also choose from the best apple varieties to cross for breeding new apples for very sweet, flavorful new types. I’m also breeding new red fleshed apples. If you like crunchy, sweet, tart or apples with special flavors, watch my apple tasting and grafting videos to find out what might suit you best for your own apple trees.
