For most, the B-29 is simply remembered as the plane which dropped the only atomic weapons ever to be used in conflict. However, the history of this amazing aircraft began well before this event and continued to be written long afterwards. The Superfortress would in fact soldier on for several decades, flying 20,000 sorties during the Korean War; with the ultimate variant, the B-50, not being retired until 1965.
A much more recent milestone occurred on July 17, 2016 in Wichita, Kansas, when B-29 ‘DOC’ made his first flight in 60 years. Reflecting on his exciting story throughout this program are a group of dedicated volunteers and B-29 alumni whose blood, sweat and tears helped return ‘DOC’ to the skies. This distinguished group of heroes share their intimate B-29 memories as they proudly represent hundreds of restoration and management warriors who call themselves “DOC’s Friends”!
