In this video, we compare the visual differences between 14k white gold, 18k white gold and platinum. All 3 diamond engagement rings used in the video are created with the same exact 6 prong design.
As you can see, there’s almost no discernible visual differences between the 3 types of metals. Under a specific lighting condition and angle, the platinum ring on the right may look a shade darker in color tone but it is still bright, silvery white.
To the eyes, the 3 metals actually look identical. This is because the 14k and 18k white gold rings are finished with a layer of rhodium coating which gives the ring its luster. Platinum by itself is pale grayish white in its raw form but it can be polished to an ultra-shiny surface like you seen in the video above with no secondary plating or coating.
The main differences between 14k white gold, 18k white gold and platinum lies in their physical characteristics and properties like hardness and durability. They are also very different in prices.
Platinum is the most expensive and is the softest of the three. Being relatively softer gives platinum its better toughness and durability.
White gold is a harder material and the differences between 14k and 18k lie in their gold purity content. As a practical shopper, I recommend buying white gold rings unless you are allergic to nickel and your skin will rash up upon long term contact with white gold.
