The hypertapping technique pioneered by Joseph Saelee is a technique that can be used to play Tetris for the Nintendo Entertainment system. It is performed by vibrating a finger on the NES controller's d-pad left or right button depending on which way the player wants to move the piece. Players who choose to use this technique often do so because they are not interested in playing at a level high enough where the rolling technique pioneered by Cheez_fish is the only option and they do not want to hold down the d-pad as the piece movement is too slow to be consistently efficient through an entire game. Level 29 is often dubbed the 'killscreen' for its high speed and difficulty. From 2018 to 2021, when the hypertapping technnique was at its peak in terms of playerbase and overall skill, players started pushing the boundaries of the killscreen. As is seen in this video, the killscreen is playable with hypertapping, but the maximum height limit for moving pieces right and especially left is small, which means it requires either great skill or great luck to survive for long stretches. I have personally spent a massive amount of time grinding level 29 starts with hypertapping, and got quite good results before I was forced to switch to rolling to keep up with the meta. I still managed to get a lines pb of 116 lines, which I was and still am very proud of. Today, I was simply playing level 29 with hypertapping for fun for the first time in a while, and got very lucky with this game. This is why I was quite shocked at this sudden pb, to say the least.
