Nearly 1,400 people, including almost 800 foreigners, are missing across Nepal and Tibet, authorities said, after a wall of mud and rock collapsed into a Himalayan river, sending catastrophic flash floods through towns and valleys.
The devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border have killed at least 359 people, Nepali police said today. Chinese state media had earlier reported three dead in Chinese-controlled Tibet, taking the total killed to at least 362.
Rescuers used helicopters to search for survivors and drop emergency supplies to thousands cut off after the floods swept a rugged mountainous region thronged by trekkers and pilgrims linking Lhasa in Tibet with Nepal's capital of Kathmandu.
A lake has formed at the site where the flood in Nepal occurred is rising and is at risk of bursting, the country's disaster authority said, as it appealed to residents and rescuers to stay away from the river banks. The blockage of a river yesterday led to the lake's formation, the authority said.
