Ancient Architects | 11,000-Year-Old Plastered Skulls of Tell Aswad @AncientArchitects | Uploaded December 2023 | Updated October 2024, 40 minutes ago.
Tell Aswad is a Pre-Pottery Neolithic B site in Syria, located 35km east of Damascus.
Excavations revealed some truly incredible finds, 9 plastered skulls dating back to between 10 and 11,000 years ago. They were placed in a specific pattern, alongside juvenile human remains, in the very bottom layer of the settlement.
Most were painted with red ochre and one with yellow ochre. Their features are realistic, their eyes are depicted closed and the workmanship is of the highest quality. These are the faces of Pre-Pottery Neolithic people, and that’s according to the people themselves, a truly incredible archaeological find that memorialises them forever.
These are the faces of the ancestors but why were the skulls plastered? Were they laid to rest in a ritual or ceremony?
