"Can you help me?" is translated as "Pouvez-vous m'aider?" "Vous" is the formal "you" in French. Another situation where formal language is often used is retail/service situations. Some examples from the video: "L'addition, s'il vous plaît." ("The bill, please.") "Comment souhaitez-vous payer?" ("How would you like to pay?") When speaking to someone older than you, it is best to use formal language, regardless of the situation.
