The iconic “island theme” is often associated with hikes and treks across the island, but also makes subtler appearances throughout LOST. For instance, merely the theme's chords appear when Jack is about to board the Ajira flight to 'Guam' ("316") and when he talks about his motivation for wanting to return to the island ("Lighthouse").
The theme appears in all six seasons except the fourth, changing dramatically over the course of the show – along with the survivors’ perception of the island itself. While mysterious and wondrous in the show's first season, the “island theme” starts to sound more dreary and dramatic during season 2. The memorable metallic drum ceases to appear after the season 2 episode “Everybody Hates Hugo”. A specific DHARMA-related version (played on playful harp and strings) is introduced in “The Man Behind the Curtain” and appears in nearly all episodes taking place in the year 1977 (season 5). By season 6, the theme appears downright casual.
Over the course of the show, the “island theme” is combined with established character themes, including John Locke's, Kate's, Ben's, Juliet's and the Man In Black's. Its four chords also end up forming the basis for the “Heart of the Island theme”, introduced near the end of the show's final season.
