I travel from Zurich, Switzerland, across the Alps to Milan, Italy, on what is often described as one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world.

Instead of taking the Bernina Express, I travelled on regular local trains along the Albula and Bernina Lines. Along the way, we enjoyed an ever-changing series of spectacular views, including glaciers, alpine lakes, stone viaducts, mountain villages, and the famous Brusio Spiral Viaduct.

Route: Zurich → Chur → Albula Line → St. Moritz → Pontresina → Bernina Line → Tirano → Milan

Cost: Zurich to Tirano: CHF 112
Tirano to Milan: approximately €12.50
Total: approximately US$150 / ¥25,000

How: Regular local trains, rather than the Bernina Express panoramic service

Experience: There was still so much I did not know.
