10 Creative Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills

1. Work Within Absurd Constraints
Set extreme limitations within your project to force creative problem solving and unexpected ideas.

2. Sketch an Idea Every Day (Badly)
Daily rough sketches build creative thinking. No pressure, no judgment. Just ideas.

3. Collect Inspiration in the Real World
Get out of the house. Find ideas in the physical world that you can see and touch.

4. Make Something Intentionally Ugly
Break design rules on purpose. Ugly teaches you what actually makes something work.

5. Use Random Chance as a Guide
Flip a coin, roll dice, or pick blind. Removing control sparks unexpected creativity.

6. Start a Project with the Wrong Material
Use a material completely unsuited for the job and force it to work.

7. Use Tools Incorrectly (But Safely)
Push tools beyond their intended use and discover new techniques. Safety first!

8. Build a Project Using Only Found Objects
Use scraps, junk, or discarded items. Designing around them unlocks creativity.

9. Give Yourself a Nonsense Rule
Add a ridiculous constraint for the day to challenge your process and spark new ideas.

10. Remix a Past Failure
Take an old project that didn’t work and turn it into something completely new.
