Wild places, where big game can live an entire lifetime without every seeing a human, still exist. It's places like this that offer refuge - to the deer and elk, bears, wolves, lions - to me and others like me. People who, as Aldo Leopold once said, could not live without such places. The last time I was in this particular wilderness was nearly 10 years ago, on a float hunt for rutting mule deer. I carried one of my hand made osage selfbows on that hunt and was able to take a fine little buck as he trailed a do to within 15 yards of where I was standing. On this hunt I'll be carrying my .50 caliber Flint lock rifle. With the extra range offered by the muzzleloader I'm hoping to connect with one of the mountain monarchs that call this mountain wilderness home. We're backpack hunting and, because the winter weather can get nasty, hot tent camping on this backcountry public land hunting adventure. Could we see a catch & cook? 😉
