Shock loads such as water hammer, slugs, and pressure relief loads can impact a piping system severely.

On the other hand, pipe stress analysis programs such as CAESAR II have a dedicated dynamics module that can analyze these load types accurately.

For that purpose, two popular methods are used for the analysis of these shock-types loads:
- Spectrum method
- Time-history method
