Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ decadeslong friendship with GOP megadonor Harlan Crow and Justice Samuel Alito’s luxury travel with billionaire Paul Singer have raised questions about influence and ethics at the nation's highest court.
SCOTUS released its first-ever code of conduct in 2023 following months of reporting by ProPublica detailing these undisclosed gifts to justices. The code of conduct does not include any enforcement mechanism. Congress has tried to get information relating to these gifts voluntarily. When it didn’t, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to approve subpoenas. Months later, they hadn’t been issued.
