The first "enemy" that most Civil War soldiers saw were NOT soldiers on the battlefield, but rather, disease. Childhood diseases like measles and mumps spread like wildfire in the encampments. The #1 killer in the American Civil War was dysentery & diarrhea. In the Union army, over 44,000 soldiers died from these two diseases. The horrible conditions, coupled with the grotesque wounds of war, made Civil War surgeons indispensable.

Our organization was started by public school teachers, David Raymond, Eric Gimbi, and Mike Graham. Dave, Eric, and Mike are incredibly passionate about teaching and education.
