We edited live for two hours in front of an audience and then had our videos judged. Mine ended up winning, but whew was it close with Xophi as an opponent. At its core, Hallelujah is about how faith in God can be the final refuge for a man swallowed by a quiet desperation. God is frequently called upon in this song, but he does not answer. God is the last hope for salvation, but the evidence of his absence mounts all the while. In Utena, the main character (Utena, uh duhhh), sees the prince that saves her as a child as a near-religious figure. She idolizes the prince so much that she overlooks his role in enslaving and torturing Anthy and accepts it as necessary for the world of Otori. As she gets older, she is more critical and rejects the idea that Anthy cannot (or should not) be saved at her own extreme personal risk. Like God in this song, the prince is not coming to save Utena or Anthy, and the meaning of Hallelujah warps into a cold, desperate wish for a happy ending, a tree branch rapping on the warm window of God, aggressively tapping telegrams to no one.On a personal note, this is my daughter's favorite song by a long shot. I put this on in the car ONCE and from that point on she wanted to hear it all the time. Every night when I put her to bed, we sing the entire song together, her eyes peeking out in wonder from under a warm fuzzy blanket. She is 2 and she knows the words to every verse. "She tied you to the kitchen chair -- she broke your throne and she cut your haaaaiiir" is her favorite lyric, haha. I was/am a sucker for meaningful intertwining of romance drama and metaphorical supernatural elements.If I'm being honest, anime has always influenced what I think about love. Love, to me, is an intense, grand kind of force. It overcomes insane obstacles by nature, but not necessarily easily. I'll spare you the monologue, but I have a wife and a daughter that I give absolutely everything to and even in exhaustion, I couldn't be happier. It's not something easily put into words, but I am so grateful to be engulfed by it each day :).Anyway, this is kind of borne from that early middle school budding thought. This boy has no serious interest in Sayaka and promptly forgets about her. Just to stay semi-alive, she has to continually fight witches for eternity. Hell, she even gets imprisoned in a world of illusions in the timelines where she doesn’t get so lost she turns into a witch herself. Freaking brutal.This AMV bounces back and forth between the abject reality Sayaka’s decisions put her in and the lighthearted approach to fighting witches she adopts when she gets used to it. It wasn’t easy to make so I hope you enjoy it 😄Also, as always, you subs rock. I am always shocked someone, say, sees my AMV at a convention competition, likes it enough to vote for it, then thinks about it long enough to find it on YouTube, and then just feels like they still have to leave me a comment just to say something directly to me. Arcane AMV | Worth the Weight | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2022-04-11 | Arcane Vi AMV about the crushing weight of picking up Vander's legacy, charting her own path in a new era, and saving Jinx at the same time.This Vi AMV represents a real turning point in my style, in my opinion. It is heavily rooted in the lessons learned from "What We Mean When We Say We'd Give Up Everything" and the experiment, "HUMANS WIN." Both of these helped me understand how to deliver complexity and speed without overloading your eyes/brain in, what was for me at the time, an extreme song challenge. "Worth the Weight" is about applying the same principles, but with a much stronger plot line and emotional depth. It's actually a relatively hokey song from Encanto, the Disney musical, but interpreted in a very serious way for Vi. It has been an absolute pleasure to grow into this kind of project. There is a long way to go for me and that is the best part. It's just a fun ride with some deeper meaning if you've seen the series.Jujutsu Kaisen was a show I initially avoided because it was instantly popular and heavily promoted everywhere, but... it's actually really good. It's the first series I've seen in a long time where the good guys genuinely have the upper hand nearly all of the time. It's something I didn't even realize I liked. It's snappy and plot driven. The second you think "I wish X dude would fight Y dude," the series delivers that exact second. Check it out if you haven't.(hiding this just for you :p)This project was a completely unmeditated one. I did not hear this song and think "this HAS to be a Jujutsu Kaisen AMV because it's sooooo perfect." In fact, you'll probably hate the song. It's really grown on me. I've come to appreciate all the snaps and turns in the rhythms and how absolutely relentless its pacing is. It's actually kind of the worst song to pick for an AMV in a way because of that. But that's why I picked it. Fast epic rap is something I know next to nothing about how to accomplish and I just wanted to get really frustrated by something lol. So this was just a fun challenge that I spent a good amount of time on, but it did not come out perfectly. If you like the music, it's really troubleclef with the good taste.Anyway, Madoka was something I had to watch a while back for a competition and the first three episodes almost made me puke rainbows, but the fourth episode really surprised me with how dark it gets. The whole premise of going back in time over and over to save someone who you can't save, who you have to not only watch die every time, but also have to put through abject, catastrophic misery, was pretty interesting. Homura gets so insane she's willing to rip Madoka's soul to save a piece of her innocence. Interesting show if you like being whipsawed :P.As always, I hope you fine subs are going really well. Draft Mode: What We Mean When We Say Wed Give Up Everything DopplerDo 2021-07-06 | You subs asked for it and you got it! Here is a draft mode look at What We Mean When Oh My God I Am Still Reading a Title WTF. I hope it's interesting at this higher level. A detailed breakdown would be insane -- I might just do an AMA where that's on the table since I have no idea how to illustrate keyframe city without boring the hell out of you LOL. Keyframe city though is a paradise to me :p.Let me give you some quick things that you might conclude watching this:1. I almost always prototype -- meaning I slap the song on and throw things I've been thinking about down pretty quickly. When I have no ideas for a section, I just let a previous clip run long in case there's something that pops up and I get lucky. It's a hedge against ever thinking I'm too clever.2. After a good chunk of work, when I feel really attached to what I created, I duplicate the sequence in Adobe Premiere and call it something like "Draft 7 - brutality" to give myself permission to cut scenes I'm afraid of or try something different. If I massively fail, I know I can always just reopen Draft 6 like it was a save point. I've done this like 1,000 times and I have only gone back to a previous draft less than 10 times. It's crazy how often what I'm scared to do is exactly what I need to do. IRL I always define freedom as "being able to completely f*** up with literally zero consequences." This is just the editing version of that.3. I work primarily in sections -- this is mostly about how I focus, but musical phrasing is super important to me and it's a pain in the ass to carefully change two overlapping sections rather than approach them separately (most of the time).4. Again, iteration is way more powerful than inspiration. I enjoy the period of total suck before finding what works. Once I get into a groove and start making good pieces, there's no going back to the period of suck, which has it's own thing going. I sometimes laugh out loud at how bad an idea turns out and that is FUN to me.If you got this far reading, I really hope you're editing a lot yourself. If you're a smaller channel than I am feeling like you have to blast your AMV everywhere to get like 45 views, I implore you to enjoy the period of slow ramp-up. I really loved having 400 subs and knowing almost all of them individually and at 1K, it's absolutely great in a different way, but it's wholly different, even though a channel with only cats farting would have 4M subs. Enjoy the goddamn ride, you magnificent animal. You were not put on this Earth to count views!

I made this May 21, 2020 when my newborn daughter had finally fallen asleep next to me. I wanted to make something that was more like the first AMV I ever made. I remember opening some bunk simple editing program way back when with a handful of random anime clips I found on the internet, slapped a song I loved on the timeline and then just threw those clips at it and hit play. Lol the video was pure garbage because there was almost no editing (like this one), but I can't begin to express how deeply I was moved by it. You'd have to wait like 2 whole minutes, but then I'd see something click with the music by pure luck and it made my teenage heart knock against my ribs. I kinda knew then I would always love making AMVs.To be totally honest I work really hard on these things just hoping that after making 100 of these, I have a chance inspiring just a few people to open up some random free program and start making cool AMV themselves. This song is a longer one with massive builds and Psycho Pass is an intellectual thriller (I totally recommend it btw) that I needed to get really clever with, but the concept really fits, I think, so I had to do it. This was originally for AWA 2020 but as much as I love competing there, I have a very hard time sitting on a completed video because all of YOU are my priority. Even though I know you all have tons of subscriptions to tons of channels--and my stuff is not the center of your world at all lol--I can't tell you guys how awesome it is to have you guys signed up to see my next AMV. 800 subs is way more than enough. I'll keep busting my butt to help breathe more life into this kind of niche hobby :p! Also, if you're one of the thousands of drifters, I love you, too; I just wouldn't loan you any money sry XD!
Beyond the Boundary AMV | Everything I Wanted | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2020-05-31 | Beyond the Boundary AMV about love and appreciation peeking through a thick fog of depression, mostly inline with Billie Eilish's original intentions for the song.For about a year or more, I've been really experimenting with what sync even is. Hard cuts are better than any fancy transition when they're used well, but even so, the reason the camera shake preset editors get so much unwarranted praise is because, even if a hard cut is appropriate, anyone can do it -- sync is thoroughly commoditized and dead as a differentiator at this point tbh. Internal sync, where like an arm moves to a beat, rather than a cut, is only a slight improvement and it can't be used as often as needed. Even moreover, fanciness for the sake a fanciness is an obvious cover for mediocre editing; it has to be really brutally tied to a concept to have any real artistic meaning. People will give views to fanciness, but won't stop to remember who you are if that's all you employ.So in this brutal world (this brutality is why I love amvs so much), I made this to experiment with serious integration of sync styles and fanciness all tethered tightly to a somewhat ironic narrative. It's just an attempt to catch up to people already pulling this off well -- BioticAMVs comes to mind right away. As always, there are literally no presets or plugins in this. Every scene was color corrected from scratch and was handled as carefully as I know how. After "Carry Me Home," where I tried to remaster every scene (lol try making 480p look decent in 1080p sometime, esp. Naruto :p), I've really started to understand how light and colors work in general. But that said, I'm just starting to understand and this is just a humble attempt at meeting the brutal expectations of the amv world where no one cares who you are unless you hit a 9.5/10. LOL now troll me XD!

This was super hard to make because the characters spend most of their time eating cake around tables lol, but I tried to focus on the heart of the anime: how meaningful it is to start something, dream recklessly, and conquer your fear of performing/sharing.On another note, I am just one dude in the universe, so this is totally subjective, but out of the millions of strategies out there for achieving your dreams, I feel like this is the only one you need to remember:1. Figure out what would be fun to accomplish2. Ask yourself what you would *give* to achieve it (e.g. I would give 1 hour a day, etc.)3. Revolutionary Girl Utena AMV | Starboy | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2020-04-16 | Revolutionary Girl Utena AMV about losing ego, attachments, and deep trauma in the pursuit of freedom and agency.Utena is story that doesn't really live in its plot line, but rather in the depth of its esoteric metaphors that a viewer has to decipher themselves. Every character is living in a heavily controlled world, victims of their perceived roles and sense of confidence within them, and at some point have had innocence violently ripped from them. Everyone seems to want to go back to a time where they last felt control except Utena and Anthy who conspire to break free at any cost without knowing what's beyond (and we don't get to know either). Its my opinion that Utena and other characters can transform into cars because it's a metaphor for using your own power and how necessary it sometimes is to strip most of yourself away to abandon a poisonous world. I really tried to stay true to the artists' metaphors, but be as inventive as I could at the same time.*you still here?*I gotta say I first thought this song was a really typical bombastic song, but when you really listen to the lyrics, it's about an artist who is so bogged down by materialism, drug use, and a fear that he's too far down that road to climb back out. He's actually turning on his fans and blaming them while simultaneously mocking them, hence the "ha, ha, ha" chorus and starting the whole song off by saying, "I'm trying to put you in the worst mood." Interesting and gutsy move for an artist.I hope this concept is fun for you to think about. It was crazy intimidating to start this and I gave it more of my energy than any video so far. When I started this project, this seemed like a massive challenge, but hey, 12 drafts later I was sad to finish it and move on. I learned so much about narrative, color blending, and balancing a viewer's focus with the visual complexity I wanted to stuff in every second.I made this for Anime Weekend Atlanta, which is an exclusive contest, so I've had to sit on this since the deadline months ago. It was super frustrating keeping this from my illustrious subs, but hey it's here now, and more will be coming in fast :p!

But this time.....he didn't come back."Oh hey subs, some subtle things no one will think about unless I point them out:1:08 - This is all three of the famous Julia falling death scenes combined -- these are so common that I wanted to do something new with them. The way Julia's hair curls around Spike's fingers like ripples moving away was deliberate -- an added layer to the neglected rose in the puddle motif. Pause here and just check out how the colors interact in a rad way.1:13 "Hiding in the bushes" - lol i just like that this worked out in a cute way1:18 "Like a bullet in the freezer" - Vincent is an extremely talented soldier who was trapped on the icy hellscape of Titan and forgotten -- something dangerous kept in long-term storage. The freezer spinning into space after was icing on the cake. That freezer scene needed to be used in at least one Cowboy Bebop AMV.3:52 -- This ending text doesn't actually appear in Cowboy Bebop, but it's one of my favorite monologues that really serves as an self-referencing allegory. Sakura Con 2019 Opening Ceremonies AMV | High Hopes | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2019-04-19 | Hey, everyone! I made this anime mix AMV for the Sakura Con 2019 Opening Ceremony. I set it to drop at the same time that it plays at the actual convention, so hey, you're watching it with me and the crowd! Sakura Con is awesome -- my hometown con -- so let's get HYPED :p!Lol I had to work with pretty random sources (I tried to prioritize the animes that the convention panelists are from), but I tried to add that sweet emotional friction that keeps you from knowing just how to feel exactly. If you want to space out (and many people will because they're with their awesome friends), it totally works as fluff, but if you know the anime backstories, there's some emotional depth for you to have intellectual fun with :p. The song is upbeat and about ambition, but it also tries to weave in some really serious themes, so heck let's make it sad sometimes :p.But in the end, I'm just trying to do a quick favor for the kick-ass folks at Sakura Con. They work so hard and this opening video is likely to be the least impressive thing at the opening ceremony compared to all they've done. BNHA AMV | Cant Stop Me Now | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2019-04-16 | This was my original BNHA AMV idea before "New Kings." Lol can you tell I am not the biggest fan of Midoriya-based AMVs :p? I mean "Pure White Gold" (made by the talented Sean.PNG) came out and that's the ceiling, folks. There's nothing else to do with Deku :p.I really tried to keep this tight and relatively raw to align with Bakugo's personality. His rise to greatness is a slow burn in the series and its often spurred on by his frustration with those around him and I tried to focus on that.

Madoka Magica AMV | Going Under | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2019-01-10 | A Madoka Magica AMV that I hope actually makes sense lol. Madoka is so psychologically complicated and some of the metaphors and motifs are so buried that it's really difficult to just tell a good story, especially when lyrics force a particular arc, but I gave it my best. So yeah, no super fancy effects like in "The BEAT: Side X" -- just an attempt at capturing the psychological pain of Homura as she slides toward being the literal embodiment of evil as she tries to rescue Madoka and let her (or at least a piece of her) live a normal life at any cost.
Madoka Magica AMV | Hard Reset | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2018-12-09 | Puella Magi Madoka Magica is honestly well worth your time. I highly recommend this series despite the fact that the very last thing I would normally watch is a magical girl anime.1) The art is extremely risky for a studio to produce and I love that they said screw it this is the kind of art we want to make, and 2) it's a clever subversion of the standard magical girl (or mahou shoujo) genre that hasn't changed much since the Sailor Moon days. It takes about 3 episodes to start making you say "wait, where the hell is this going?" but the wait is worth it in my opinion.I actually only watched this series because I competed in Kumoricon's 2018 Battle Royale and the theme was "Magic and Mayhem" (secret link to my 2 hour live edit here: youtu.be/8EikGNuWlxc). As a grown man my reaction to the theme was youtu.be/31g0YE61PLQ, but I saw that Madoka was on the list of sources I could use and I'd very recently started watching the Anime Crimes Division which references it in the first minute here (youtu.be/F2BT-cK2ZG4), so I sat down to watch it just to know what I was working with. So, this is side A -- the video that came out on top -- but I will upload Side B soon so you can see what the original looked like. The idea is that you can just focus on the story and the music brings it alive by enhancing the emotions in the scene :p.
Evangelion AMV | Deep Blue | DopplerDo DopplerDo 2018-06-03 | A psychological Evangelion AMV that looks at the deep mental conflict of Evangelion's main characters, specifically Shinji & Gendo & Rei, Misato & Ryoji, and Kaworu. I had a great time juxtaposing moments of kindness with the characters' darker realities and consequences."Deep Blue" in this AMV, to me, is the familiar reality each of the characters in Evangelion yearn to return to, but that reality is just as sad as it is comfortable.I really kept this quote from the band in mind: "The way that I always describe addiction is that it’s very sexual in a way. You have this beautiful thing that’s staring at you and it’s constantly telling you to dive in. Then you actually decide to give in to whatever your struggle is, and it just pulls you down. It does a 180 and literally controls your life. Whether it be addiction, anxiety or depression—the feeling is that you’re trying to swim up from the depths and it’s just pulling you to the bottom of the sea."This is by far the most technical and hopefully smoothest AMV of mine to-date.
