Bunny Christies set symbolises protagonists dislocation with reality | #Shorts | Dezeen Dezeen 2024-07-15 | Designer Bunny Christie created an ambiguous, white-tiled structure that could be a swimming pool, the inside of a TV or a jumbo pill as the set for the play People, Places and Things, which tells the story of a recovering addict.Christie, who has designed productions including London's currently showing Guys and Dolls, created the set to echo the character's "dislocation with reality".The design of the set takes reference from medical settings, with wipe-down white tiles and a rehab reception desk in the centre of the stage.People, Places and Things runs until 10 August at the Trafalgar Theatre in London. Gijs Schalkx converts car to run on plastic waste | #Shorts | Dezeen Dezeen 2024-05-16 | Dutch designer Gijs Schalkx has retrofitted an old car to run on an unusual fuel source: waste plastic that is turned back into oil.Schalkx's DIY project, titled The Plastic Car (Is Made of Metal), consists of an old red Volvo with a roof-mounted "de-refinery" that heats plastic to obtain oil for the fuel tank.Schalkx, who is interested in DIY as a form of responsible design and living, wanted to build a car with a similarly original energy source and chose plastic because there was a ready supply to be found in his own household recycling.He sourced an old car from a scrapyard in Germany, fixed it up to be road-legal and fitted his "de-refinery", which he says is quite similar to a "normal oil refinery", to the top.Find out more on dezeen.comFootage by Gijs Schalkx #diy #design #technology

Serpentine Pavilion a great riddle says architect Minsuk Cho | Dezeen Dezeen 2024-05-14 | Architect Minsuk Cho discusses his design for this year's Serpentine Pavilion in this exclusive video produced by Dezeen for the Serpentine.Cho is the founder and lead architect of Mass Studies, an architecture practice based in Seoul, South Korea. He is the 23rd architect to be chosen for the Serpentine commission, and the pavilion will be his first building in the UK."This request felt like we were given a great riddle to demonstrate what this pavilion can do at this point," Cho told Dezeen."We understand architecture itself is not a beginning-to-end narrative, but is part of a larger act that is in between many befores and afters" said Cho.Named Archipelagic Void, the pavilion is set to take the form of five structures or "islands", arranged in a constellation around a central void. Each of the five structures will have a separate purpose, such as a tea house, auditorium and play tower.Cho told Dezeen how he took reference from traditional Korean architecture when designing the pavilion, especially in the use of negative space. Alessandro Mendini was an atomic bomb of fantasy says Philippe Starck | Dezeen Dezeen 2024-05-13 | In this video produced by Dezeen for Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier, Philippe Starck describes the "genius" of Alessandro Mendini following the opening of Io Sono Un Drago, an exhibition celebrating the Italian designer.French designer Starck, who has contributed an immersive installation to coincide with the exhibition, emphasised the impact that Mendini has had on his own work, citing his sprawling approach to creativity."Mendini is something special for me," he said in an exclusive video interview with Dezeen. "His brain was an atomic bomb of fantasy, with no limits."Starck's installation accompanies a retrospective exhibition celebrating Mendini at Milan design week, presented by cultural institutions Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain.Titled Io Sono Un Drago (I am a dragon), the exhibition contains more than 600 pieces by Mendini across his 60-year career.
