TIME CAPSULE March 19, 1953 KOY Radio, Phoenix, Arizona - A. G. Stores Hawaiian Contest Winners 78 RPM Records 2024-03-19 | Interview of two couples who were the "lucky winners" of a trip to Hawaii. This is an unusual find within the Bowness Arts collection of vintage records. Recorded at 33 1/3 speed, this 10-inch record plays from the inside track out (not from the outside track in). Using Audacity, the audio has been digitally transferred. So, for the first time in 71 years, you can hear this vintage interview showcasing what people thought about Hawaii and airplane travel in 1953.Created for the use of KOY Radio of Phoenix, Arizona, the record holds a March 19th, 1953, on-site interview of two lucky couples who have won an all-expense paid 10-day trip to Honolulu, Hawaii. The contest was promoted by the C&H Sugar Company and AG Stores, a chain of independently owned groceries stores which operated in Arizona during this time. At the time of this interview, the era of tourist air travel was still in its infancy. This recording provides a glimpse into the thoughts and attitudes of that time.Brief history of KOY Radio:Arizona's first radio station signed on in 1921 from Phoenix as an amateur radio station. In 1922, it received a commercial license as KFCB. The station became KOY in 1929 and began broadcasting with 500 watts. By 1948, it was broadcasting at 5,000 watts. But Tommy presses her to explain the mystery of the village, and Fiona takes them to visit the schoolmaster of the town who reveals that Brigadoon was miraculously blessed two hundred years ago, and that it lapses into a sleep from which it awakens only one day in every hundred years. No villager is allowed to leave, or the enchantment will be broken and the town will disappear forever. A stranger, however, can stay if he falls in love. Now all go down to the church yard for the wedding. Following the simple ceremony, the bride's broken-hearted suitor decides to run away and destroy the town. As he runs from the church yard, the curtain falls for the end of Act One.Act TwoThe men, in a chase through the forest, succeed in stopping the runaway, but only when he is found dead, seemingly from having struck his head on a rock. Back in the glen, Tommy tells Fiona he is in love with her, in “There But For You Go I”, and makes up his mind to stay in Brigadoon with her. Meanwhile, a lass of the village, Meg Brockie, entertains the wedding guests with “My Mother's Wedding Day”.Now Tommy tells Jeff of his decision to stay. His rendition of "O for the Wings of a Dove" remains an enduring contribution to classical and religious music. Ernest Lough died on February 22, 2000, age 88, in Watford, Hertfordshire, England.Sir George Thomas Thalben-Ball (1896–1987) was an English organist, conductor, and composer. Born on June 18, 1896, in Sydney, Australia, he moved to England as a child. Thalben-Ball served as the organist and choirmaster at the Temple Church in London from 1923 to 1982, earning acclaim for his musical contributions. He held the post of Birmingham City Organist from 1937 to 1987, becoming a prominent figure in the British musical scene.
