Enhanced Fluffball Testing! (Blender 2.71)
updated
Music: Le Monde - Richard Carter
Words:
There's a particular space through which a journey would never end,
a truly unfathomable place, it's much too large to comprehend.
It's a place of many secrets, well, all of them in fact.
Contained within it you'll find everything from concrete to abstract.
The concept itself is simple, some might even say it's comical
that something so ideologically basic would have results so astronomical.
Picture a collection of pixels, an image, if you will,
now imagine all the different ways that image could be filled.
It could be a barbecue, or a moose in a canoe
or a yew, or bamboo, or many different shades of blue.
A visual representation of every sound to ever be heard,
every letter, every word, can you see how it's absurd?
Your DNA on full display, a record kept of every day
not just of now, or of before, but going forward, evermore!
Every truth, every lie, simply waiting for your eye,
a nearly endless stream of content to delight and horrify!
Hang on, hold up a second, what exactly is the implication?
That somehow creativity is itself a work of fiction?
The question becomes not how it can be made, but instead, how it can be found...
an idea, ironically, upon which the space itself could expound.
How does one even begin to navigate such a gargantuan expanse?
If you stare into the abyss, does it return so much as a glance?
To search the unsearchable would seem to be an impossible affair,
but before you're quick to despair there's something of which you should be made aware:
every photo taken, every line drawn, every pixel manipulated
is in fact an act of exploration, motivated and dictated by you!
Your mind is designed to be exploratorily inclined,
so why not pick up a pencil and show us what you find?
(yes, of course this is a parody)

Had this idea 10 years ago, finally got around to it. Took a good couple of months too.
Maybe I'll have to come back in another 10 years in order to properly simulate diffraction and lens flare...

It's been bothering me for a while that there was no map that satisfied my curiosity about what it would look like if we actually took all the votes into account.
Finally decided to just go and make it myself.

This is a relatively simple way of being able to render an image and then access its pixel data all from one script, which allows you to do effects which require more detailed procedures than can easily be done in the compositor!

This is a quick video showing some of the stuff I did on a group project. The project was to make a video game version of a board game, in this case "Pandemic". I was responsible for creating the animation system, most of the gameplay and logic, as well as the UI and art for the game. All things considered I'm happy with how it turned out in the end, despite some of the difficulties.

These are all made using the true displacement (technically "Both") option and the adaptive subdivision surface modifier experimental features. All the "spheres" are actually just cubes! All the displacement was done using layered noise and the warping was done by animating some of the noise position offset values.

I did a little bit of improvement on this procedural generation project a while ago but never got around to making a little video so I decided it was about time!
The terrain is still generated using multiple layers of 2D and 3D simplex noise. A lot of the improvement came from the way the chunks are loaded and meshed. Instead of messing around with combining meshes, the chunks are manually meshed every time they need to be updated (in the case of a block add/remove). This method seems to be the fastest and really speeds up not only the chunk loading but general performance as well, since there are no faces present that don't need to be there (ie interior faces aren't meshed).
All the terrain is using one material with a slightly modified standard shader. A Texture2DArray is used to store all the different block textures, and the appropriate index is passed through a second UV value when meshing the chunk. The second UV channel is also used to pass a lighting value, so per-face lighting is fully functional except for the fact that I never managed to figure out a proper propagation algorithm (mostly due to the lack of planning and abundance of kinda gross code).

It's been quite the project but unfortunately, I can't see myself completing it any time in the next 3 or 4 years so it's with sadness that I'm stopping. Thanks again to everyone who helped, and I hope to keep making the odd animation here and there when I have the time for it.

My friend and I have been working on a little project and having fun with some procedural generation in unity. The terrain is generated using a combination of different levels of simplex and perlin noise in 2D and 3D space. We're able to get so many blocks on screen at the same time while maintaining a decent frame-rate by combining meshes together.

Over the past week or so I've been working on a little scene text using some No Man's Sky assets and textures. My goal is to get a look and feel similar to that of No Man's Sky but while throwing a tiny bit of my own twist on it. I sincerely hope Hello Games will approve! :D
This video shows the different iterations of the test as well as some of the post processing effects and layers that were applied. Enjoy!
