The 1999 Bridge Creek tornado is widely considered the strongest tornado because of the record wind speed measurement, but doppler measurements are not everything. The worst tornado damage ever was done by the 1997 Jarrell tornado, however there are reasons why it likely did that damage. To explore beyond those two tornadoes, I looked at F6 tornadoes, which supposedly produced damage worse than the damage outlined by an F5 tornado. These included the 1974 Xenia tornado, 1970 Lubbock tornado, and 1977 Birmingham tornado. From there I explored other tornadoes in the super outbreaks and beyond…PS, I have been wanting to make this video for a loooong time. I even had almost completed a version last year, but it was garbage, so I shelved the idea. The tornado would continue southeast straight towards the Weather Bureau Office east of Scottsbluff Nebraska. During its’ 40 mile path there would be multiple photos, video, as well as radar taken of this tornado. In 1974, Xenia Ohio was hit by one of the strongest tornadoes in modern history. But most don't know, 26 years later, in the year 2000 it was hit by yet another violent tornado that went down almost exactly the same path. According to the local Shawnee Indians, the area of Xenia Ohio was called “The Land of the Devil Wind”. Which I can almost promise you was referring to tornadoes. It’s unfortunate that this next tornado was forgotten. On July 13, 2004 a powerful tornado would form outside of the town of Roanoke Illinois. This tornado would slowly move east, heading directly towards the Parsons Manufacturing Plant. All 150 employees took shelter in one of three reinforced concrete rooms put here for exactly this situation. Despite it taking a direct hit, there were zero fatalities.There's one EF5 that’s almost never talked about. And that is the 2011 Rainsville EF5. This tornado is forgotten for a few reasons- Tuscaloosa, Phil Campbell, Cullman, Smithville were all much more notable tornadoes. The video captured by Sharlene Stephens is in my opinion the best view of this tornado. You can see how the Rainsville tornado was a strong multi-vortex tornado. It even appears to produce the “Dead Man Walking”. Which is only seen in the strongest tornadoes. Less than a month later, on May 24 a El Reno-Piedmont EF5, the most remembered tornado from this day. I think it’s quite possible a few other tornadoes were capable of achieving the EF5 rating. Especially the Canton Lake EF3. This is the strongest, most menacing looking tornado I have ever seen on video. Also, both the Goldsby and Chickasha Tornadoes were given a rating of EF4 with highest winds of 200 miles per hour. Just one mile per hour short of the EF5 rating. Had any of these tornadoes been rated EF5 I can almost promise you they would have been much more remembered. It’s also worth noting this outbreak occurred two days after Joplin, which overshadowed even the El Reno-Piedmont EF5.So May 4, 2003, and April 14, 2012. stands out- the F4 that went through Kansas City. At one point, a horizontal vortex rode the front side [of the tornado], showing that this tornado was extremely strong. Now let’s go back to the April 14th tornado outbreak. Only one [tornado] would achieve EF4 status- the Salina EF4. This tornado was an absolute BEAST. The most epic video was taken by Team Twistex when the tornado crossed the road right in front of them. You could also see a large horizontal vortex manifest in front of the tornado, just like the horizontal vortex seen in the 2003 Kansas City tornadoI covered the Pilger Nebraska Event, where four different EF4 tornadoes were spawned by the same supercell. But most don't know about the other tornado. In Burwell Nebraska a classic looking tornado would form. Up close this was an incredible tornado, but the true beauty is seen from the further vantage point. The tornado was below unbelievable surpell structure. Had this tornado occurred on any other day, I almost guarantee it would be considered one of the best tornadoes of 2014On the night of December 10th 2021 history would take place. The Mayfield EF4. The second EF3 would directly impact an Amazon warehouse, taking the lives of six workers. Bowling Green Kentucky, killing 17, making this the second most deadly tornado of the outbreak. On the night of March 24, a single storm would end up dominating the atmosphere, producing the Rolling Fork EF4 tornado. The storm continued on, well past Rolling Fork, producing two other EF3 tornadoes- the Winona tornado, and the Amory tornado. Radar scanning the storm showed that the Amory tornado had winds higher than the Rolling Fork EF4. Also, the Amory tornado’s path was less than a mile from the path of the Smithville EF5. And what’s crazy, the Amory tornado was actually wider than the Smithville EF5.

Man VS Tornado HIGH RISK Chris 2023-06-04 | After my incident on April 4, near Lewistown Illinois, where I was INSIDE of the tornado, I was left without a car for the entire month of april, missing the Cole Oklahoma tornadoes. Eventually I found a vehicle - a 2004 Subaru Forester, which is a much better vehicle for storm chasing compared to my previous vehicle, a Toyota Prius. My first storm chase would be on May 5 in south western Nebraska where I would see some beautiful cumulus clouds. The next day, May 6, I would chase in northern Missouri where I would witness a beautiful supercell and a tornado near Trenton Missouri. My position behind the supercell allowed me to see a clear example of RFD winds wrapping around the back side of a supercell causing a tornadic circulation on the north side. I would chase again on may 7 in Iowa, but wouldn't see anything too special on this day. My next chase was a 10% tornado chase in my backyard - Colorado. I would see a little dusty tornado/landspout, but the real prize of the day was the extremely close lightning. The next day was another 10% tornado chase, but this day had two targets, one in northwest Kansas, and the other in central Oklahoma. After lots of deliberation I decided to chase in Oklahoma, missing the tornado fest in Kansas, as well as the other tornado in Cole Oklahoma. The next day, may 12, was a chase day in central Nebraska. Because of my positioning, I missed out on the INSANE Spalding Nebraska wedge tornado, but I didn't give up on the day, and would end up intercepting the North Bend EF2 tornado, which is one of my best ever tornado intercepts to date. This tornado was a rare F5 tornado that traveled south-east, a majority of the tornadoes in the united states travel northeast. On May 27, 1997 a slender tornado would form north of the town of Jarrell Texas. This tornado would move southwest, and would intensify as it got closer to town. What it would do next was truly disturbing. It would stall over the Double Creek Estates for at least two minutes producing arguably the worst tornado damage ever recorded. The entire sub-division was swept clean, all that was left was mud. A similar tornado would take place near Eureka Kansas on July 6, 2016. The tornado would move southeast and would stall at one location attaining EF3 status. Like the Jarrell tornado, this tornado would do the worst damage where it was moving the slowest. On May 28, 2013 a large tornado would form near Bennington Kansas. This tornado would perform an odd loop, but overall this tornado was well behaved and would only impact a few structures. The 2013 El Reno was another strange tornado, it would change directions, speed up, and would unfortunately be the only tornado in history to take the lives of storm chasers, impacting the Twistex team. The 2011 El Reno would also exhibit strange directional changes. But the best example of a tornado looping would occur only 20 miles away in Moore Oklahoma, where the 2013 Moore tornado would loop, inflicting EF5 level damage on the area where it impacted twice. The 2007 Greensburg EF5 would also loop at the end of its life. At the same time, another, even larger tornado would form, the Trousdale EF3 tornado. Another strange tornado path happened near Funing China, where an EF4 tornado ripped through a heavily populated area in East China. What made this tornado strange was the extreme detail included in the torando's survey, which may have been done with balloon reconnaissance. On July 26, 2014 a tornado would occur in Central Mongolia and is shown to be the only tornado in Mongolia. This tornado was EXTREMELY photogenic, but was it the only tornado in Mongolia's history? No. Mongolia has a long history of tornadoes. Okay, now for the top three STRANGEST tornadoes. Coming in at number three is the Udall Kansas F5 tornado that happened on the night of May 25, 1955. This tornado would zig zag, then would take a sharp turn. Strange, especially considering it was such a strong tornado. Number two is the 2007 Elie Manitoba F5 tornado. This tornado would take many sharp turns and loops. It would do the worst damage at the second loop, where it would obliterate an entire home at F5 strength. The STRANGEST tornado event would happen on the night of June 3, 1980 near the town Grand Island Nebraska. A southeast moving supercell would produce multiple erratic tornados, at one point there would be two tornadoes on the ground at the same time. The strongest tornado would do F4 damage on the south side of town. This event was analyzed by Dr. Ted Fujita, and he would note that many of the tornadoes were actually anti-cyclonic, making 1980 Grand Island Nebraska event even stranger.

Is The EF Scale Outdated? HIGH RISK Chris 2022-12-09 | On the night of December 10th 2021 and extremely violent tornado would rip a 165-mile path through western Kentucky, directly impacting the towns of Mayfield, Princeton, Bremen and many others. This tornado would do high end damage, fully sweeping multiple homes off their foundations. The surveyors would determine that this tornado was EF4 strength with a maximum windspeed of 190 miles per hour. To understand the decision made by the surveyors you need to understand the history of the EF scale, and how it works.The EF scale in its current form uses damage to determine the maximum windspeeds within a tornado, is this practice outdated with modern radar as well as videos and simulations of storms? The practice of using damage to analyze tornadoes got its start in 1945 when Tetsuya “Ted” Fujita would analyze the Nagasaki atomic blast on the ground. Ted Fujita would later move to the United States where he would continue his analysis of ground damage, except this time it was in the field of meteorology, specifically on tornadoes. Fujita would theorize that tornadoes had multiple vortex structure based on the damage patterns he observed. In 1974 an extraordinary tornado outbreak would occur; 148 tornadoes would materialize in over a dozen states and Canada. This day would provide the best tornado footage at that time, where tornadoes in Muncie Indiana and Xenia Ohio would verify Fujita’s theory of multiple vortex structure. It was clear using damage to assess a tornado was a valid technique. Over 30 years would pass, until 2007 when the National Weather Service would adopt a new scale, the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This scale was the same as the Fujita scale, except there were slight modifications to the projected windspeeds at each respective category, and there would be 28 outlined Damage Indicators to do a better job outlining surveyed damage to a windspeed. Since its introduction in 2007 there have been only 9 EF5 tornadoes, which is quite low considering there have been over 25,000 documented tornadoes during this time. Is the lack of EF5 tornadoes due to less violent tornadoes occurring? Or is it due to the way the EF Scale works. I believe it is because the EF scale relies on damage to occur for it to rate a tornado. Many tornadoes happen over open fields and do not do any damage that could have been used to rate a tornado. If the EF scale were to also take into consideration vehicle damage, ground scouring, debris granulation, doppler radar, photogrammetry, and simulated environments, I believe tornadoes would be more accurately rated.There are cases where the EF scale has misrepresented a tornadoes strength. The worst example of this was the 2013 El Reno tornado, which was the widest tornado, had measured winds greater than 300 mph, tossed multiple cars over 100 meters, but was only give an EF3 rating because the worst damage it did according to the Damage Indicators was EF3. The second example was the 2021 Western Kentucky tornado also known as the Mayfield Tornado, which swept multiple homes off their foundations and left granulated debris nearby, which in my opinion is indicative of an EF5 tornado. The last example covered is the tornado that hit Rochelle and Fairdale Illinois. The National Weather Service would survey the damage and determine at 20 different spots the maximum windspeed was 200 mph, which is only 1 mph under the cutoff for EF5 strength. This seems unlikely to have not had over 200 mph winds given the incredible video and ground scouring this tornado produced.I am not alone in my criticisms. In 2021 a paper was released by respected scientists that stated “Supercell tornadoes are much strong and wider than damage-based ratings indicate”. The observed that 20% of all tornadoes have extreme winds, which is much more than the 0.4% of tornadoes rated by the National Weather Service. In conclusion, the practice of determining a tornadoes windspeed through the damage it leaves on the ground is an outdated practice that originally started due to the lack of information. Non-stop Lightning in Nebraska HIGH RISK Chris 2022-07-30 | I witnessed an incredible lightning show in Nebraska on July 27, 2022. Initially the storm was an isolated supercell, which looked like it could produce a tornado from the wall cloud, however, it was just scud. The storm had a brief moment where it had decent storm structure, however it was short lived. I stopped and let the storm blow over me. It was decently strong, maybe 40-50 mph winds. The real show of the night was on the back side of the storm, where lightning strikes were continuously striking. This was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever witnessed, with the lightning and the mammatus clouds. This was one of the greatest lightning displays I have ever witnessed. The Closest Ive Ever Been to a Tornado HIGH RISK Chris 2022-07-08 | Please, do not do what I do, it is dangerous, and tornadoes are not something to mess with. On May 4th, 2022 I observed four incredible photogenic tornadoes in Texas, the first two were near Paducah Texas, the next tornado was near Crowell Texas, and the last was a night time tornado near Lockett Texas. I would get extremely close to the third tornado, which was the closest I've ever been to a tornado. I stopped storm chasing at night because it was dark, and storm chasing at night is too dangerous, even for me. HUGE Lightning Bolt - it was LOUD! HIGH RISK Chris 2022-05-27 | On May 17, 2022, myself and my two friends were recording lightning in Kansas when this HUGE positive (+) Lightning Bolt landed right in front of our eight cameras. When the thunder did arrive, it sounded like 10 supersonic jets flying directly overhead, and was by far the loudest lightning strike I have ever heard. Tornado and Car Struck by Lightning! HIGH RISK Chris 2022-04-18 | On 4/12/2022 I had the most incredible chase of my life! I started the chase north of the storms in Iowa, so that I could maneuver in front in case a tornado formed. I observed many CG, or Cloud to Ground, lightning strikes as the storm was maturing. This is a good sign, and indicates the storm is rapidly intensifying. Next, I noticed extreme motion in the clouds and a funnel cloud, a EF2 tornado was coming right towards me. Next thing I knew, there was this big dusty tornado on the ground. The tornado rapidly condensed into a stovepipe, and ultimately turned into a classic textbook tornado. I followed along the tornado, taking 4k60 and 360-degree video of it, and caught the entire life cycle of the tornado near Palmer Iowa. After the EF2 tornado, I found myself in Gilmore City Iowa, where I once again ran into fellow youtuber and friend Pi from the weather and storm chasing channel More Pi. Next, a tree almost fell on top of me as I was stopped on the side of the road. Immediately after, I captured video of Pi’s Prius getting struck by lightning. Pi’s car was immobilized, so he decided to get in my car to continue the chase. We had fallen behind the main storm, so we decided to drop south. The southern storm was a beautiful supercell that was dropping an intense lightning barrage all around the vehicle. UFO Mothership Storm in Nebraska HIGH RISK Chris 2022-04-03 | On March 29, 2022 I captured this incredible supercell thunderstorm near Columbus Nebraska. This storm looked like an alien UFO mothership. Supercell's can produce strong winds, large hail, lightning, and in some rare cases- tornadoes. The general danger associated with these storms gives them an evil feeling, however as long as you don't stand in the middle of a field with a golf club above your head, you'll be fine, just focus on getting the shot. To best shoot supercell structure, I prioritized 4K time-lapse video, as well as shooting with my widest angle lens.
MONSTER EF4 in Winterset Iowa HIGH RISK Chris 2022-03-08 | On March 5th, 2022 I witnessed this large and extremely violent EF4 tornado west of Winterset Iowa. This video is the real time synced up raw footage of the first 7 minutes of this tornado's life. This tornado exhibited many tell tale signs of a strong tornado- it had a large horizontal vortex on the leading edge, sub vortices, as well as being extremely wide or a wedge. Winterset Iowa EF4 Tornado in 360° HIGH RISK Chris 2022-03-07 | On March 5th, 2022 I captured this large violent wedge tornado near the town of Winterset Iowa via a 360 camera on top of my car. Experience what it is like to view this extremely rare phenomena in VR. If you listen closely, you can hear the roar of the tornado. This was by far the strongest tornado I have witnessed to date. You can see large chunks of debris being tossed by the tornado. The tornado also had many horizontal vortices, which is another visual indicator of an extremely strong tornado. My Most Intense Tornado Intercept #shorts HIGH RISK Chris 2022-02-23 | My most intense tornado intercept ever was an EF2 tornado near Fort Recovery Ohio that occurred on June 18th 2021. What made this tornado intercept so intense was how close I was, and the strong nature of this tornado. This tornado was rated as an EF2 tornado because it destroyed multiple buildings. At one point I was in northern Illinois during the Illinois tornado outbreak, for a second I thought I would see a Chicago tornado. I did document the Naperville tornado damage. I drove through El Reno Oklahoma at one point and missed the tornadoes in Tuscaloosa Alabama this year, but even though I was in a tornado watch and tornado warning, I never saw an F5 of EF5 tornado. I also included some footage of the violent tornado from the December 10th tornado outbreak. This tornado went through Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The worst damage was in Mayfield and Bremen and was rated EF4.
