I conquered my fear of heights on Japans steepest summit

GoNorth Japan 2024-09-22 | I started this hike at Kamikochi, going all the way to the Yarigatake Lodge on day one, and back on the following day. There are a lot of other trails, and most people spend a few nights in between. There's also the option of going across Daikiretto, the steepest (and potentially most dangerous) trail in Japan. I didn't feel ready for that just yet. Next time I may try the Daikiretto route.. there are so many great areas in this mountain range. It is crowded though, which made me appreciate the trails I usually hike up in Iwate and Akita.

This 1000 Year Old Festival Just Ended

GoNorth Japan 2024-03-08 | The festivals mentioned in this video are Kokusekiji Sominsai (黒石寺　蘇民祭), Saitogi (サイトギ), and Hatsukayasai（平泉二十日夜祭). The dates of Saitogi vary based on the lunar calendar, but generally it's sometime from late January through February. Hatsukayasai is held between January 14th and 20th, with the climax being the final night.

How to Section Hike North Japans Michinoku Coastal Trail

GoNorth Japan 2023-11-23 | The new Trail & Train website offers a lot of useful information about the trail as well as a luggage delivery plan, local guide services, and more:

Unfortunately, the official government site (tohoku.env.go.jp/mct/english) recently pulled all the free PDF maps they were offering for download. Now you have to pay for them, unfortunately. Still, it is better to get paper maps for the section that you're interested in hiking, so worth ordering in advance. You can order maps here: m-tc.org/en/explore/map

There's also a great free informational site/community by a half British, half Japanese man named Robin. He hiked the entire trail in 2022 and has gathered tons of great resources on his site: michinokutrail.com

Whiteout conditions on a volcano in Akita, Japan

GoNorth Japan 2023-03-08 | Akita Komagatake is a popular spot all year round among hikers and lovers of the backcountry. In the winter you can hike up from the Alpa Komakusa Hot Spring parking lot to the summit area on skinned skis or snowshoes. It takes roughly 3 hours to reach the summit at a casual pace. But be careful of the weather - it can become dangerous on bad days.

The Best Section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail in Japan

I also love the area to the north of the Unosu Cliffs ( goo.gl/maps/G9miR47PwJmktQnB6 ) but to hike that far down in one day I'd need to start early and have a nice long June day, not these crazy short winter ones.

Walking in the Footsteps of Akitas Matagi Hunters

GoNorth Japan 2022-11-14 | Mike Harris runs both Canyons in Minakami ( canyons.jp/en ) and KODO Travel ( kodotravel.com)

The route that we walked that day isn't ready for tours just yet, but Mike is working with the Matagi group to develop a number of activities and hikes with the local Matagi that tourists will be able to experience in the near future. Of course this is all designed as sustainable adventure tourism that is meant to contribute to the preservation of local culture and wildlife. I'm also doing my best to assist with this project and may in the future be doing guiding in tandem with the local Matagi. We'll see!

Exploring Nyuto onsen and a wild hot spring on foot

GoNorth Japan 2022-11-03 | Tsuru no Yu is the most famous of the hot springs facilities at Nyuto Onsen in Akita, but there are actually several of them, and a shuttle bus that you can use to go between them. There's tons of English information available online about it, so I won't reinvent the wheel and try to repost all of that here.

Someone spray painted all over a sacred volcano in a Japanese National Park

The Yakehashiri Lava Flow site of course is worth visiting even if you're not hiking. It's right near the trailhead here: goo.gl/maps/Cb3d8iw8zn3Giw4r8

In all there were 59 rocks and trees that were tagged with blue spray paint. Most were smiley faces and a few were arrows. I did contact the Hachimantai Mountaineering Association and they told me that they would contact me when they go to clean it off, so it looks like I'll be able to go with the clean-up crew, hopefully soon.

I did hear from 2 eye-witnesses that the white guy who did this was caught by the police at the trailhead. Apparently someone called the cops while he was still on his way down so they were waiting for him when he got back to the parking lot. Of course nothing was made public about the charges or penalties for what he did - don't know if he was arrested, fined, or what. Probably privacy laws will keep that from being made public. But at any rate it is resolved as far as the law is concerned, or will be shortly I would assume. It's not a mystery as to who did it, the police know... just the rest of us don't. Because this happened before tourism opened, it's gotta be someone working or studying in Japan. I wish I knew if it was a local or someone just passing through.

One of the Wildest Festivals in Japan - Yokote Okuribon Matsuri

GoNorth Japan 2022-09-01 | The Yokote Okuribon Festival (横手の送り盆まつり）is held every year on August 16th from around 6:30pm. While its origin lies in the tragic famines that struck during the Edo period, the atmosphere is anything but subdued. There's electricity in the air and just being there is exciting, even if you're just watching! It is dangerous for the participants - in the last 20 years there have been two deaths, people that were crushed under the 750kg yakatabune boats. (They place flowers and offerings where they died before the festival starts every year.) There's also a fireworks display at the end!

Dont miss this adventure in Otaru near Sapporo

GoNorth Japan 2022-08-25 | I actually didn't plan on making this video. I only had my GoPro with me, and I thought I'd just record a little bit to share with my Patreon supporters. But then looking at what I recorded, despite it being a bit rough- I thought it conveyed the excitement of that location well enough that I wanted to share it with wider audience in case I can inspire some people to visit!

To be clear- this hike is better done as part of a guided tour- an "Adventure Tourism" tour. The tour hasn't reached its finalized form yet, but when it does I'll post links here. But let me also share a bit of the location, so the bolder folk can visit individually if they so desire. The 3 Great Summer Festivals of North Japan

GoNorth Japan 2022-08-12 | The official 3 great festivals of Northern Tohoku are Tanabata, Kanto, and Nebuta, not Sansa, Kanto, and Nebuta... but Tanabata is just decorations with no events or even festival music, so I'm intentionally replacing it.... (Take that, Sendai!)
(Also- I should have specified these are the biggest for Northern Tohoku, not all of north Japan, as Yamagata and Fukushima, which are in southern Tohoku, have some pretty major ones as well. Hope to get down there for some of those next year!)

You can catch a bus from Morioka Station to the summit area of Hachimantai. This site shows where the stop is and has schedules as well: trip8.jp/accesstobus

An Ainu Folktale Told in the Ainu Language!

GoNorth Japan 2022-07-31 | The woman reciting this tale is Hisae Kawamura, whom I met at the Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Memorial Museum in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. If you get a chance to visit Asahikawa in Hokkaido, I definitely recommend visiting her there. They have a traditional Ainu home built on the grounds, and a lot of beautiful artifacts and photos.
