This is a series of short videos about opening paragraphs and the different things they do.
Does word choice matter? Does the 'prose' really matter? It should come as no surprise that I think they do, and so did Robert Asprin.
Diving back into a fantasy example after taking a brief detour to other writing and this is from Robert Asprin's Another Fine Myth.
Elevated language representing the character's level of literacy and education, snark demonstrating their quick wits and personality, and a wonderful way to introduce a magical world in which magic is an accepted part of the diegetic reality. This is a fun opening to look at.
