Kevin deLaplante | 007: When Rational Debate is Impossible @PhilosophyFreak | Uploaded September 2016 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
Episode 007 of the Argument Ninja podcast: "When Rational Debate is Impossible".
In this episode I answer a listener question and in the process I amend my original answer to the following question: “What conditions must be satisfied to have a rational conversation with someone?”
First amendment: (1) what to do after you’ve recognized that there’s a communication problem.
Second amendment: (2) what to do in light of the fact that our capacity to reason comes in degrees.
(Spoiler alert: there's no easy answer, but any solution requires paying more attention to the psychology of human communication than the rigor of your arguments.)
The podcast is available on iTunes, Stitcher and Acast.
