5 Tips to help IMPROVE Your Woodland Photography
updated
See how I got on this last week.
No details.
Thanks for watching!!!
Not so well...
Has my fitness level improved?
Watch and find out!
Am I still going strong?
Am I fitter or healthier?
What's a shower beer?!
Thanks for watching everyone - Are you enjoying the running videos?
This is an update after the first week, and let me tell you, there are already some marked benefits and surprising results of just one week of exercise.
What started out as a new year resolution has already had some great health benefits after only 1 week of exercising everyday.
I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised!
But it's not all smiles and sunshine - it has already been challenging too!
A bit of a long video so I commend you for watching until the end! XD
We all look to set some goals and new years resolutions but often the traditional approaches and typical resolutions are difficult for me to stick to or don't necessarily make me feel good.
BUT what I do in January usually energises me, and super charges me through the beginning of the year that I usually continue into February too.
Follow me as I post updates of how I get on with my January challenge, and let me know in the comments what you have decided to do!
If you have come to to this video to find out where I have been and what I have been up to, then tough, I'm not going into that - sorry :) Mainly because it has been too boring...

Whatever your hobby, pastime or passion, remember to take the time to do those things you love.
I think that we don't always notice when an opportunity comes along for us to get out there and enjoy our lives, or we dismiss those opportunities because conditions aren't perfect or guaranteed, but if you love what you do then no opportunity can be a bad one.
In this video there was only a slight chance of mist in the bluebell woodland I was photographing, and I hadn't crossed my mind to get up for the sunrise regardless, but a chance chat over social media with another photographer encouraged me to do so, and I had a wonderful morning.
Therefore, I think I have Stu Meech to thank for that :)

Why run? It started off when I was running every day for RED January, and a message of support from Julian which also said he always fancied running up Cat Bells to photograph a sunrise... so we did!
Running and keeping yourself fit is of course good for you, and there is a lot to be said for the old adage "A healthy body is a healthy mind".

1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by mental health issues but the stories are often hidden from view - the more we talk about these things the more normal it becomes, and the easier it is to get help and help ourselves.
In this video I meet Sylvia Slavin, a photographer based in Yorkshire. Tragically Sylvia's son John took his own life at the turn of 2018, and here we hear about how John had struggled with depression for most of his life, and how he had tried to mask it. Losing a child is a horrific thought for any parent, and even more unthinkable when it is to suicide.
Suicide amongst men between the ages of 20 and 49 is at crisis point. So many people who lead seemingly good and happy lives are suffering in silence and something needs to change.
To cope with grief Sylvia has always resorted to being active and creative, and her photography is a real example of this. It is a message and lesson for all to learn, as being creative is proven to help with mental health issues, and something that everyone should try, especially at those times when we feel helpless.
Thank you for listening to Sylvia's story.

Photography is a great way to escape the chaos of daily life and relax, but it isn't always easy to find a simple image amongst the chaos that nature presents. In this video I purposely seek out simplicity, not just in my images but in my life.

1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by mental health issues but the stories are often hidden from view - the more we talk about these things the more normal it becomes, and the easier it is to get help and help ourselves.
In this video I meet Chris Nowell, a landscape photographer who happens to be the only registered blind landscape photographer in the Peak District! He shares his story of how he was injured in Afghanistan and how the injury lead him to find his love of photography.
Overcoming the challenges Chris has faced is no mean feat, and he now pays back by doing some great work with Blind Veterans UK, but photography for him is much like for myself - an escape, a place to relax, an place to enjoy the beautiful world we live in.
Thank you for listening to Chris's story.

In this video I give some advice that may seem counter intuitive, but for many people the enjoyment of the hobby is what they are in it for, and when you are relaxed and enjoying yourself it is then that you begin to produce your best work.
Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for more regular content from me in the future!

"Depressing" is arguably the wrong term to use, as depression is a condition that goes beyond one day and the circumstances that surround it, but there are some very real feelings that can overcome us as pressures mount up at times.
In this short video I just wanted to remind people to focus on what is good in their lives to help in supporting their mental health.
Have a happy and health 2019!
In January I am running EVERY SINGLE DAY in support of my mental health and the RED January campaign.

1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by mental health issues but the stories are often hidden from view - the more we talk about these things the more normal it becomes, and the easier it is to get help and help ourselves.
In this video I meet Simon Turnbull, a landscape photographer originally from the Lake District and now based in Hertfordshire. He shares his story of how he buried his feelings when he faced with an earth shattering family event, and how seeking help and photography helped him recover when those feelings reemerged months later.
Simon's stunning images focus on the details and the beauty that surround him; a perfect life philosophy.
Thank you for listening to Simon's story.

1 in 4 people in the UK are affected by mental health issues but the stories are often hidden from view - the more we talk about these things the more normal it becomes, and the easier it is to get help and help ourselves.
In this video I meet Andy Elwood, a mental health campaigner who has spent his life helping others. The message he shares is simple yet strong. Talk about it and feel better.
Andy himself is not a photographer, but after our conversation he understood how it can benefit. He passed comments on how to progress and improve in things like photography "get out and do it!", not spend time watching endless videos or reading magazines, get out there and try - you either win or you learn.
Working towards improvement is a fantastic way to improve your mental wellbeing, and having a goal provides a drive and motivation that can others dwindle if we are not feeling your best.
Thank you for listening to Andy's story.

Having never been there before I didn't know what to expect and so I took the opportunity to have a bit of a casual explore and see what would catch my eye.
One thing I love about photographing a new place is the whole idea that it is simply an exploration, where you can remove all that expectation of coming home with a set of great images. With no preconception of an image or expectation of the type of image you are going to capture you remove that pressure and make it a simply enjoyable experience for yourself. In fact on this outing I got so carried away and lost that I nearly became late for my other appointments of the day! But oh so worth it :)
Thanks for watching.

Reflecting on what is going on in our lives is so important. It helps us put things into perspective, to work out how to cope with our troubles and solves our problems.
Giving yourself some headspace whilst out and about with your camera is an ideal way to to free your mind, rest your mind, and reflect.
I make photography videos that concentrate on the mental wellbeing aspect of photography and how it can help us all to unwind, destress and cope with life's ups and downs.
If you haven't already, consider subscribing to my channel, and leave me a comment and let me know how you destress and reflect.

When we head out with a camera we often feel pressured to capture an image, which can sometimes make the experience frustrating, but I had removed any pressure from myself to capture a photograph, and it is often when you remove pressure and expectation that you work more calmly and effectively, and this is what happened for me.

My process involves a lot of the traditional planning that goes into video production, and this is my preferred approach. There is more than one way to skin a cat of course, and this is just the way that I do it. Occasionally my videos will be more spontaneous than this but by planning the video and scouting locations beforehand I am able to get the footage I need and have an idea of what I need to do to create the mood and the story I want, as well as make the editing process go more smoothly.
The process I tend to follow is this:
An idea
Develop the idea
Planning
Recce location
Video shoot

The overall process can take a few days in all, and often that is a lot longer than I expect, but with the time and effort I put in I get results I am happy with.

The truth is that you may not find lists of what settings to use, or cameras to buy, but you will find out how I stay motivated and what photography means to me.
In the pursuit of trying to take perfect images it is easy to lose the reason why you want to take photographs in the first place.
Thanks for watching!

I give you five tips that are what help me to capture my images, as well as appreciate and enjoy the entire experience of heading out into the beautiful landscape.
For me, enjoyment is a huge part of landscape photography, and I believe that if you are enjoying it taking great photographs just become he bonus at the end of it.
Some of these tips you may have heard many times before, but I have tried to add my own perspective to them and explain why they are important to me.
1. Use a tripod - primarily to slow me down and give me the headspace to really concentrate on what it is that I am capturing.
2. Use manual settings - doing these helps you to be more creative and capture the type of photograph that you had visualised.
3. Get up early (stay up late) - not only for getting good light, but to really benefit from that feeling of solitude and as if the entire world is there just for you.
4. Challenge yourself - doing something difficult makes the result seem that much more rewarding, and keeps things fun and interesting.
5. Forget about taking a photograph - we always seem to find something once we stop looking for it. Trying to hard to find an image can do the opposite, so just relax and enjoy the surroundings, and often you will see something you want to photograph.

Staying motivated to go out and do a bit of landscape photography during the summer can be tough - the early sunrises and late sunsets make it difficult to get out during golden hour, and everything can be so green that it makes it difficult to find any other interesting colours.
When I feel like this during the summer I like to visit the coast, the water and interesting coastal features can make images more interesting whatever the time of year. I combined this with another method I have of getting my mojo back - Photographing either a well known scene or subject, or even going back to photograph something you have photographed many times before, can put you in a position where you get your flow back and feel invigorated to go out with the camera more and more. Durdle Door is one of those places, a real favourite amongst landscape photographers, and photographed many times before, so by giving yourself a better chance of capturing something interesting and successfully - giving you a bit of an easy win - can really help you get your motivation back again.

Making that video made me realise how I live by a certain set of principles that often encourages me to choose to do something instead of opting out.
For example, I mention here that you can easily talk yourself out of going out with your camera, or not to enter a competition like Landscape Photographer of the Year, but if you decide not to do these things you are only guaranteeing that you will come away with nothing. Choosing to do something rather than not do it gives you a chance at the very least, and that's sometimes enough.

It's sometimes difficult to decide whether or not it is going to be worth heading out with your camera. The clouds have been hanging about all day, and the forecast gives a slight chance that the clouds will break and that the sun will shine in the evening golden hour - so why should you take that chance?
This is exactly what happened to me, I was very close to staying home, but in the end I'm glad I headed out, as I not only came away with a photograph, but I had a couple of chance encounters with some wildlife too!
Thanks for watching!

The last year did not go exactly as I expected - but saying that, I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting in the first place. It is always said that you need to have a clear goal to work towards in order to achieve something, and on the outside it may have seemed like turning pro was that goal. What I now realise is that the reality was that I needed to make a change in my life and the goal was to recover from a tough time in my life and make a change to what I was doing with my time on this earth.
I believe that photography was the vehicle that could get me there, but not the goal itself. This may seem surprising to many who started following me from the beginning, or perhaps it is no surprise at all.
Whilst I have achieved some things over the last year towards starting my own businesses, I achieved so much more in the way I approach life and the things that I do, and I have this YouTube channel to thank for a lot of it. Being able to share my thoughts and feelings has helped me to realise how much photography helped me when times were hard and that by sharing those experiences publicly I am able to help others too.
Followers of my journey will no doubt be aware that the direction I am now heading is towards sharing stories, and raising awareness of the health benefits of photography and creativity.
I am releasing online photography for wellbeing, and mindful photography courses, and will be running workshops in the future to help those that need or want it. I am also volunteering photography courses for mental health charities and want to dedicate my time and efforts towards doing this so hopefully those that need it can gain the benefits I did.
Thanks for watching over the last 12 months, your support means so much.
This is not the end of my journey. It is the beginning.

Sadly I wasn't blessed with any morning sunlight - which makes the stonework in the buildings look incredible! - but I will return!
The paintings that I talk about in this video:
St Mary's Church and the Radcliffe Camera From Oriel Lane
http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/turner-oxford-st-marys-church-and-the-radcliffe-camera-from-oriel-lane-d00156
Merton College, Oxford
http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/turner-merton-college-oxford-d25472
Turner's High Street
ashmolean.org/turners-high-street
Joseph Mallord William Turner, arguably one of Britains most influential and accomplished artists, visited Oxford many times during the 19th century and produced several paintings that captured street scenes in the city.
We've all heard of 'artistic licence' and I quickly learned that there is a lot used in Turner's paintings, buildings with parts missing or added on, and the impossible perspectives to give the viewer a more pleasing view of the scene to name but a few. Perhaps the equivalent of photoshopping out elements and making composite photos?!
What I also learnt was that it can be very difficult to try and recreate someone else's work and get the same sense of satisfaction you do from capturing something of your own.
Thanks for watching!

When we look at how much time we have we can easily feel like we simply don't have the time to head out with our cameras. You know what it's like, you're tired from a long day and sometimes the appeal of sitting a home relaxing can be too much of a pull for us to grab our camera bags and head back out for another couple of hours - but have you also noticed that when you do head out with your camera you feel revived and glad you did it?
Having a spot always in mind that you can head to at the drop of a hat makes it easier to make the decision to head out and get your fix. I did that here. I took a drive to White Horse Hill in Oxfordshire as the sun was only an hour away from setting to hopefully capture some golden light across the landscape - but do I make it?!
Thanks for watching and look after yourself.

In this video I ask many questions that have been on my mind, centred around how I determine if my images are improving or not. The answer is that I am not entirely sure. Partly I feel like the only opinion that matters is my own, and that if I like an image I am happy enough with it, but then I also want others to like the image too.
So what makes an image a good one?
The number of social media likes it receives, the number of acclaimed competitions it wins...? If it doesn't meet this requirement, what do I need to do to improve on it and create a better image?
It might seem like these questions have simple answers - but I am still uncertain as to what I want to achieve with my images and what I need to do to get there.
Thanks for watching - don't forget, that a follow up video to this will soon be available where I will discuss the images that I capture here.
Look after yourself!
David!

In 2014 I was signed off sick from work with stress. I had a lot of things happening in my life which contributed and triggered this episode, and a lot of advice I received at the time was "you just have to get on with things..."
I took this too literally and felt that no one wanted to hear what was going on with me so I bottled up all my thoughts and feelings and barely spoke about them, playing down any of the major stressors that were affecting me - and that for me was not at all the right thing to do.
I got worse and worse, and became depressed which affected all areas of my life until I reached a breaking point in 2016 where I just had to do something about it. My wife convinced me to go and speak to my doctor once again, and my road to recovery began.
I started to look after my own wellbeing more by going out with my camera, a hobby which was something that I had completely given up as I had started to I become unwell, and I began noticing the world around me once again.
Photography has played such a big part in my return to wellness, and I continue to use it to manage stress and anxiety. I dedicate a lot of my time now trying to spread the message of how much it has helped me and how it can help others.
Stress is called the silent killer, and there are so many people out there who may be suffering in silence. Campaigns like this do great things in raising awareness and getting people to talk about it, and that can be so important to so many people.
Take care of yourselves.

There is something so incredibly beautiful about bluebells in the early morning. The bright green foliage of the surrounding beech trees illuminated by the sun enhances and highlights the scene, creating such a wonderful sight that can put you in a great mood for the rest of the day.
Getting up early and starting the day with something positive can be a great lift and put you in a great mood for the entire day. Having achieved something so early on means that whatever else happens you have done something, and achievement or progress towards a goal are great factors in staying motivated and satisfied.
Mental wellbeing is something that is important to me, and I make sure that I get to enjoy these moments as often as I can, and plan my photoshoots so that I do not spend the time rushing about hunting for a composition at the time when everything is happening. Sitting behind your camera waiting to release the shutter whilst watching the morning unfold is a calm and relaxing experience and that for me is the way photography should be.
Photography has helped me so much in managing my own mental health. It’s stress relieving, relaxing and meditative. If you are looking for a way of developing your photography in this way I am working on workshops and online courses to help you practice this approach and you can register your interest here.

I also discuss why camera settings aren't as important as you might think, and that there is a more important element to photography for me than that.
From the comments on that video it sounds like many viewers held some of these images in high regard, so I hope that this talk through explains the reasons and ways I captured these images in more detail.

Cathedral Quarry is and old slate quarry now owned by the National Trust, located in between Ambleside and Coniston in the mouth of Little Langdale. It's a fascinating place with many paths and and caverns to explore, and it was just what I needed to reinvigorate my motivation which had taken a knock a day or so before.
The main cavern is the obvious choice when taking photographs here, but there are a few details which present more opportunities that shouldn't be missed, and so also I worked on capturing some intimate landscape images in and around the quarry.
I stopped here on my way back home after my visit to Ennerdale. I'd had a mixed bag of photography which you can see in this video if you haven't already.

The expression "don't go chasing waterfalls" is a warning to avoid taking the difficult path, but sometimes you have to find a new way. This is something that I have learned in the past twelve months, and although my journey has had it's ups and downs I feel I have to continue to pursue my goals which occasionally means chasing the odd waterfall.
This is the first video from a visit to the remote valley of Ennerdale in the Lake District, but I don't capture any images, instead I try to but realise that that the driving factor was to produce something for YouTube. They say you should always photograph for yourself, and ordinarily I do, but on this occasion I had let the need to create a YouTube video guide me in what I was doing. In this instance it didn't work out for me, but overall having a YouTube channel has given sent me down a path I didn't expect, but has been such a profound influence on what I do and why I do it, and I wouldn't change that for the word.

My approach to photography has benefitted my mental wellbeing so much - if you want to learn more about my approach and mindful photography exercises then visit my website.
People have often said that I have a very mindful approach to photography, and here I took a walk in a small area of woodland to capture the story of a fallen tree.
Mindful photography is rooted in the practice of Mindfulness, however it is something for me that comes without actively trying to practice it - that is what photography is to me, a means of connecting with my surroundings, appreciating them, and enjoying them. It is from there that I can form compositions, and create images that have more meaning to me.
Contact me if you are interested in learning more about my approach to photography and how it can help a full mind.

I decided that after weeks of rain I needed to get out and photograph something. I headed back to the woods with the idea of putting some of the tips from my last video into practice - you can see that video here youtu.be/-dkLUakDKQs - I work on a couple of images and give some tips on woodland photography composition and how telling a story can make your woodland images more compelling.
Why did I choose the woods again? Because woodland is a great subject to photograph on grey days, and here's why. Ordinarily woodland can be difficult to expose due to the high contrast between the dark shadows in the undergrowth and the bright highlights of the sky through the canopy. Grey days, and clouds, diffuse the light and make the exposure much easier to balance, especially for cameras with a fairly low dynamic range.
When shooting this video, I had a little incident with my video camera, and it's not the first time it's happened... watch to find out, and give me your condolences after...
In this video I also support Julian Baird's hashtag campaign
#EmbraceTheGrey
You can upload your images and videos using that hashtag and Julian will feature some of the best submissions. You can check out Julian's channel here.
