Caffeine is in a lot of drinks and a very common additive in several products you get from the store or the gas station. I decided to eliminate caffeine from my life for a month just to see what happens and I did have a positive outcome.

Caffeine is considered a dehydrating agent and can dehydrate your voice. Vocal cords need hydration and somewhat of a mucus or lubrication to work and function well. If your vocal cords are dehydrated it can limit your range and your ability to sing.

With no more caffeine in my life along with a healthy meal plan, I have noticed my vocal ability has improved and feels better overall. Some may not have the same outcome, but for me this has been very eye opening.

"Voice-related studies of hydration have been concerned with systemic and superficial hydration. Systemic hydration refers to adequate fluid located within body tissues and is predominantly achieved through water intake. Conversely, superficial (or surface) hydration is defined as the hydration of the surface of laryngeal mucosa that keeps the epithelial cells moisturized and lubricated, and is achieved via steam inhalation or increased environmental humidity. Inadequate hydration can adversely affect vocal fold viscoelasticity, oscillation threshold and voice quality, since vocal folds are covered with a thin mucosal surface layer that has biomechanical and protective properties.

Human studies have demonstrated that both systemic and superficial dehydration adversely affects phonation. Reduced hydration over a fasting period greatly affected maximum phonation time (MPT) and perceived phonatory effort (PPE) in males and females.30,31 Inadequate hydration also negatively impacted acoustic, perceptual and aerodynamic measures in professional singers following a 2-hour rehearsal."

Can You Sing With Braces?

Cherish Tuttle Music 2022-01-18 | This last year I got braces! My husband is an Orthodontist and he finally put braces on me. However, this was nerve-racking for me because my job relies on my ability to be able to sing and I had no idea what to expect. I have never had braces before and I was very worried it would alter my sound. These are my thoughts over the last few months of having braces while also singing at performances and teaching voice lessons. I thought there might be someone out there that would benefit from this video.

Although braces require some getting used to, for me it was safe to say that I was able to sing with braces. Singing mostly has to do with the vocal cords and braces go nowhere near there which is comforting! I did have to work around, braces, brackets, or appliances in the mouth but after a couple days I was able to figure it out and continue with singing as normal. What has been your experience with singing and getting braces? I would love to hear from you.

Dialogue of entire Video:

Today I am getting my braces off and this is my orthodontist, Kyle Tuttle, he's my husband. I just wanted to do an informational video about what to expect if you sing and you get braces. So I'll tell you all about it.

I know I have not posted in a while. Probably partially due to covid and I have three tiny little kids so that keeps me pretty busy. But I have been wanting to do this video for a while because for the last 11 months I had braces on and today I got them off. There's really not a lot of information out there about "Can braces alter your sound?" or "Should singers feel worried if they get braces on." So I wanted to do a video for you. I feel like I have a little more knowledge behind things going on too because my husband is an orthodontist, he's the one that did my braces and did the whole treatment with me.

When you get your braces on I would not recommend that you schedule it next to a performance or a major theatrical production coming up or any major performance you have coming up you need a couple days to adjust. Now when you are putting those braces on you are moving teeth. And so it might be a little sore and tender for a couple days and sometimes it's hard to sing through that. Give yourself a couple days or week to adjust and then I bet you you will be fine to sing what you need to sing. I feel like through the whole process I was able to sing fine through it. I didn't love it, singing with braces because it was more difficult. I had to articulate my words more, I was easily slurring or having a little bit of a lisp sometimes because there was all this extra stuff in my mouth. I had to really concentrate on how I was saying things or singing things that is another thing to consider when getting braces but it's fine. You'll be able to sing just fine.

I did have these blue little bite-plates put on the back behind my front teeth for a while that I had for about two months. I had a real lisp when I had those, so sometimes there are appliances or things applied in the mouth that can be kind of aggravating for singing but you'll still be able to figure out how to sing around it.

Another thing is if you are someone that has to use rubber bands with your braces, feel free to take them off during your performance so that you have full motion of your jaw, relaxing it and just being able to sing without popping a rubber band or even popping a bracket with a rubber band. It's ok to take it off for the lesson or for your performance and then put them on right after. It is important that if rubber bands are part of your treatment, it helps your treatment go a lot faster.

A lot of my voice students fall within that range of when they get braces. I feel like most kids get braces between the age of 11-13 or 14. And that's usually when I am starting to take students in so we are all going through this process together of "I'm getting braces. Do I feel comfortable?" And my answer to you is yes. You'll be able to sing, it's fine. You'll be so happy when you get them off anyways.

I hope this video was helpful. I have a lot of things I am planning on posting in the future. I'm just slow at it because I put my family first and I put my kids first but I am planning on posting a lot. So here's to the future and me posting a lot more videos!

Definition of Confidence:

A feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.

1. Stretch it out: keep moving to distract from nerves
2. Focus on breathing
3. Become familiar with the place you are singing - ask to do a sound check
4. Practice Practice Practice — put in the time.
5. You think you are being judged: you have the ability to change those thoughts and think more positively.
6. You are in charge of how you develop as a singer. This means if you need to enroll in lessons to be more confident behind your singing — do it! You are dealing with a muscle so the more you sing, it strengthens and you can become more confident behind what you are delivering.
7. Sing In front if someone: ask your mom if she will listen to you. Randomly break out in song to someone in your house.

In my last video we went over drinks that help hydrate the voice, and this video will continue our study of what we can do to keep our speaking voice or singing voice hydrated throughout the day, even with the foods that we eat. Did you know that it can take up to 4 hours for water to reach your vocal folds? So don’t wait until you are thirsty and make sure you are eating foods that add hydration to the body as well. I found this quote from a medical article and it reads,

"Up to 75 percent of the American population fall short of the 10 daily cups prescribed by the Institute of Medicine – which, in medical terms, means that most people in the U.S. are functioning in a chronic state of dehydration. 60 percent of our bodies is composed of water, 75 percent in our muscles, 85 percent in our brains, it’s like oil to a machine,” explained Dr. Roberta Lee."

Many of my listeners may not be living in the US, but I guarantee this is a current problem everywhere. We all could focus on Hydration and this is why our vocal chords need hydration:

The vocal cords are soft, elastic and floppy. When you are singing or even speaking, your vocal folds are coming together and making vibrations and sound. These vibrations are fast: hundreds of times per second, depending on the pitch (lower pitches = slower vibrations, higher pitches = faster vibrations). Imagine how difficult it is to make these fast, flexible vibrations without your voice being properly hydrated?

If you’re not well hydrated, this can lead to irritation, redness and swelling in the vocal folds. Fully hydrated vocal folds need less force to come together and vibrate.

Good hydration also makes the mucus that covers the vocal folds thinner. There will alway be mucus on the vocal folds but we don't want too much. For a normal situation, when the mucous is thin, we don’t really even notice it, or realize it's there. But when it's thick, you definitely notice it and it can affect the way you sing and how you speak.

Adding fruit and vegetables that contain a lot of water to your diet, will help you stay hydrated. Foods that contain a lot of water include;

Cucumber
Iceberg Lettuce
Celery
Radishes
Tomatoes
Cauliflower
Watermelon
Spinach
Strawberries
Broccoli
Apples
Bell Pepper

Foods High in Vitamin A:
Vitamin A helps keep the soft tissue and mucous membranes healthy in your throat which will give you better overall throat health. Vitamin A is found in high quantities in eggs and meat. It is also available in fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, sweet peppers, carrots, apricots and cantaloupe, as well as in dark, leafy greens, such as kale and spinach.

What drinks can help hydrate the voice? Here I am going to list a few drinks or options to help hydrate the voice before singing and what things help with overall vocal health. I have had a few subscribers ask this very question so here are the facts.

First are a few drinks to avoid before a performance:
Stay away from dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and soda.
There are a lot of drinks that are dehydrating, acidic or even produce extra phlegm. Caffeine does produce an alteration in voice quality but the effect can vary for each person.

"In the United States (U.S.), more than 90 percent of adults use caffeine regularly, with an average consumption of more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day. This is more caffeine than in two 6-ounce cups of coffee or five 12-ounce cans of soft drink."

One of the most overlooked aspects of keeping your body working at its peak condition is hydration. No matter what you do, it’s extremely important to keep your body hydrated. Dehydration can cause problems such as headaches, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth.

Being well-hydrated can reap some serious benefits:

1. Water promotes cardiovascular health. ...
2. Water keeps your body cool. ...
3. Water helps muscles and joints work better. ...
4. Water keeps skin supple. ...
5. Water helps cleanse your body — inside and out.
6. Water helps prevent dry mouth. Water keeps your throat and lips moist and prevents your mouth from feeling dry. ...

So you may have guessed it, but water is very important when you are a singer. Medically, it is recommended to drink half your body weight in ounces of water a day. I usually try to drink at least 62 ounces of water a day but I usually go over that amount. Do slow down on the amount of liquids you are drinking an hour or two before a performance. Usually an hour before I sing, I move from liquids to a cough drop or mint to prevent dry mouth before having to sing.

If you are someone that needs something a little different than water, there are a few more options to help hydrate your voice.

Warm Water with Honey and Lemon: can help soothe and hydrate your voice.

Decaffeinated Herbal Tea
Whenever I catch a head cold and need something to soothe my voice, I usually buy a an herbal tea from the grocery store. There is one in particular called "throat Coat herbal tea" that I really recommend and you can add lemon, honey and even a pinch of cayenne pepper. This combination has worked wonders when feeling sick and just needing something to soothe the voice.
