Your garden might be looking a little tired and sad this time of year but there is no need to worry! In this video, Jane Moore, an award-winning gardener, provides valuable tips and insights on how to get your Autumn garden looking great.

In previous years, Jane would have advised you to have a real good tidy up of your garden but as times are changing, her thinking has also! Nowadays, her concerns have turned towards making her garden a good habitat for wildlife, which means not being so ready with the secateurs and not being quite as brutal with the cutting back, although there are some plant that need pruning.

Firstly, Jane looks at tidying up her lilac squirrels, one of her favourite plants from the summer. Although this plant has had its moment, the autumnal foliage still looks great which is why Jane only takes the flower heads off for now. In a couple of weeks, she’ll look at taking the leaves off as well.

Autumn is not just about cutting things back, it’s also a great time to collect plant seeds. Jane takes a good look at the plants that have performed well so far this year. These include the sweet rocket and Nigella plant. Collecting seeds from your garden is not only an excellent way to save money but if the plant has done well in your garden this year, it's a good sign that these plants will do well again next year.

Once you’ve collected a good variety of seeds, it’s time to get out of the cold, get indoors, let your seeds dry out and packet them up. Your seeds need to be completely dry before you package them up as any moisture can make them liable to rot. Don’t forget to label your packets as you might forget what they are when the time comes to plant them!

Whilst a lot of plants have finished flowering and even set seed already, there is still a surprising amount of plants that are having a final flurry before winter finishes them off. Some of these plants will fight on, right into the middle of winter, where others will begin to die off during the Autumn months.

October and November really are the months for the golds, reds and yellows of Autumn colour. The first plant Jane looks at is the Acer Garnet, one of the Japanese maples, followed by the Cercis Forest Pansy. The trouble with autumn colour is that it’s all over before we know it! But Autumn is a great time to plan ahead, which is why Jane plants her garlic in Autumn.

If you’ve planted pumpkins in your garden you will likely find yourself with a bed free after harvesting your Halloween crops! Garlic is an excellent crop to grow as it’s so easy. The reason it is so easy to grow is that all you need to do is put the cloves in a couple of inches deep and approximately 4 inches apart, and forget about them all winter. Come springtime, they will pop up and be ready to harvest around May/June time.

There are plenty of other bulbs you can plant during autumn which will make your garden bloom next Spring, like daffodils, tulips and alliums. Don’t worry if you are short of space in your garden as these bulbs can be grown in plant pots, or even naturalised in flower beds or lawns.
