Fabric for different seasons - HOT or NOT?? Evelyn Wood 2023-05-06 | I'm sure you know the fabric I pick for summer in Australia isn't going to do much for you in Scottish winter! So how do we pick the right fabric to keep us cool or hot?There's nothing worse than making what you think will be a cool, breezy, floaty summer blouse and then when you wear it, you feel like you're melting in a plastic bag right?There are a few factors for fabric to help us know if it's going to make a garment that's cool or hot to wear!And if you didn't know already, learning about fabrics is a whole other thing we need to learn alongside our sewing skills!Knowing what fibre makes up the fabric helps us decide as natural fibres handle heat and moisture differently to synthetics.Our bodies are little furnaces always giving out heat and fibres like wool are exceptionally good for retaining heat and keeping us warm.No matter what, we are always producing moisture and having our clothes wick that away from us is important and natural fibres are perfect for that! They absorb the moisture, cool it down and evaporate it away from us. Synthetics, such as polyester, are essentially just plastic so they lock the moisture into our skin and we just dissolve into clammy puddles!Another thing to look at is the weave of the fabric, is it loose or tight? You'll have seen those sheets with like 1000 thread count right? That means that there are 1000 threads in every square inch of fabric - the higher that count, the tighter the weave so the harder it is for heat and moisture to escape, the looser the fabric the easier it is instead.Clamminess is my enemy so I sew to avoid that! What can a Walking Foot do for YOUR sewing? Evelyn Wood 2023-04-22 | I feel the most discussed sewing machine accessory is the Walking Foot! Some people swear by them, some people think 'Meh' but what can a Walking Foot do for YOUR sewing? Let's look at the pros and cons in today's video! I suppose the best place to start is by knowing what the Walking Foot is, what it does and how it works. Do you ever notice when you're sewing that sometimes the top fabric layer ends up with extra fabric at the end of a seam because your regular machine foot has pushed it along too much? This is because machines only have feed dogs on the bottom that can control the bottom layer but not the top. A Walking Foot is essentially a set of top feed dogs, maybe this is why it's the Top Dog of machine feet! 😂That's all well and good but what is it actually beneficial for? If you sew a lot of knits you know how hard they can be to control sometimes but the Walking Foot really minimises stretching and gives you more control. It also comes into it's own when working with slippery fabric and stops it running away from you.I do find it can help with Pattern Matching and thick/bulky fabrics because it increases your control over how the fabric is going through the machine.At the end of the day, the main takeaway is if you NEED one?Whilst is can be nice to have and can help with certain things you certainly don't need to have one. The better you know your machine the better you'll use it and the more mastery you'll have - fancy tools don't take away the need to develop your own fancy skills!!Have you used one? I've found so many things about my sewing machine over time that made me think "How did I NOT know that?" I've got 5 sewing machine secrets in today's video!! The better you know your machine increases your ability to use your machine to its full potential, and the better your garments will turn out. Take advantage of all your sewing machine can offer you by digging into its secrets!Here's my top 2 "why did no one tell me that secret about my sewing machine” secrets…1.For the longest time I didn’t know that lifting the presser foot releases the tension on your threads 🤯. When you know this, it means you can adjust your threads, pull them through with ease, untangle jams when necessary! The mystery was solved as to why sometimes the thread pulls through easily and sometimes not.2.Does your machine sometimes go too fast for you to stop at a specific point? I thought that all the time, until I found out you can use your hand wheel to sew with? 🤯 You can sew a whole seam with if you wanted to!Take your foot off the pedal and use the handwheel instead and sew at your pace and be able to make a precise stop! INTERFACING! Stop GUESSING and lets talk where, when and HOW to use it! Evelyn Wood 2023-03-25 | Interfacing? Stabilising? Fusing? What is it? HELP! Stabilising and interfacing your garments are REALLY important steps and you CAN'T skip them so let's break it all down to the basics and demystify the jargon! Crazily this is like the main thing a pattern envelope doesn't tell you right? So how on earth are you meant to know what it is and what you need to buy? Then you get to the store where there are WALLS of the stuff and it all has different names! This is when you panic and think 'nah, I don't need it, I'll manage without' - WRONG!Think of a smooth, sharp collar. Without interfacing it would't look anything like that, it would be flat and wrinkly, no nice corners or edges, totally wonky, it just wouldn't be what you would expect of a collar and this is all down to interfacing.If we break it all down though, you can get to know what types of interfacing there are and when to use them, that's what this video is all about. Interfacing stabilses a section of a garment that needs some structure and a bit of body, the fabric on its own can't really do that.I'll show you some different types such as iron-on/fusible and sew-in interfacings as well as wovens, non-wovens and knits. DIFFERENT types of THREAD? What do I need? What should I use? Evelyn Wood 2023-03-17 | In this video I talk about different types of thread, the various choices and why you might choose one over another for your garments. When I first found out that, just like fabric, thread is also available in different fibres - cotton, polyester, silk etc, my mind was blown and I wondered what I should use and if I NEEDED to match the thread type to the fabric!In the time since I've been asked this a lot and the short answer is that it is your personal choice. There are different factors that can help you decide though.When I started out I used whatever was on the shelf at the store, I didn't even consider there were choices other than colour!The main thread types you've probably come across are• All-purpose PolyesterThe work-horse, the most common one that we all use.• CottonThis natural fibre is the next most readily available and has more variations and types for you to choose from.• LinenAnother natural one that is most often used for hand sewing and decorative top-stitching, not many are available for sewing machines.• Rayons & SilksThis is one that you might choose to match to your garment if it's something like a sheer chiffon as silk and rayon threads are super-fine but still strong!Hopefully this video helps you make more of an informed choice on your threads and gives some starting points on how to choose.My main tip though is, find a brand you like and stick to it, stay away from the generic really cheap stuff, it has a nasty habit of snapping constantly!What threads do you use and prefer? I first came across it in business jargon but realised that it also applied to my sewing life. It really boils down to the fact that 20% of the work and effort you put into a project yields 80% of the results which also means that the last 20% of results takes 80% of your effort, crazy right?It's all in the details they say, but what details exactly?Focusing on 3 things will give you 80% of your garment result and I'll tell you what I believe those 3 are!• Right Fabric SelectionChoosing the right fabric for a project based on your current skill level AND also on the design of the garment shows itself in the finished piece.• Seam FinishesWe've all heard it, to look good on the outside, you need to look good on the inside, well the same goes for your garments. Frayed, unfinished seams will make everything look just that bit 'wonky' as well as shorten the garment's life!•PressingYou've been expecting this one right!? You knew that would be one of my top tips didn't you? Sew a seam, finish a seam, press a seam and then move onto the next step! Nothing elevates a garment more than pressing as you go!
