7 No-Work Companion Plants for the Veggie Garden - Sow Once, and Enjoy for Years! Parkrose Permaculture 2023-06-25 | In the veggie garden, early in the season, when our tomatoes and pumpkins are still small, weeds can get a foot-hold in the spaces between plants. After all, Nature wants to come in and fill that empty space with living things. My strategy is to get a jump on weeds by filling those gaps with self-sowing annuals that will protect the soil and suppress weed germination until my veggies are big enough to out-compete weeds. In permaculture we say, "Everything is a resource!" Weeds are no different - they can provide green living mulch that shades the soil and act as nurse plants to tender young starts. I find that the permaculture principles come to mind in all areas of life, nature, and human culture. When we view the world with a permaculture lens, we see how those concepts play out in so many areas of life beyond the garden. I have found a few helpful tips to make sure I get massive crops of cukes every summer! Gurus in Permaculture. Do We Have Them? Should We Have Them? Parkrose Permaculture 2023-05-08 | A while back, I had a conversation with another woman in permaculture who expressed her frustration at the "guru-ification" of a prominent figure in the movement. So, what do y'all think? Do we have gurus in permaculture? SHOULD we have them? What insight can we gain from permaculture principles about whether it's a good idea to have gurus in permaculture. Guru: gu-ru ˈgü-(ˌ)rü, (n) 1. a spiritual teacher or guide 2. an expert in a specific area who gives advice^^^ HOWEVER, in common usage, there is a negative connotation and the understanding that gurus can have an almost cult-leader like status, viewed as having an elevated consciousness or understanding of a topic, adored by followers, and resistant to criticism. It is this understanding of the term I am using in this video. Guru Syndrome can include: -"the group’s unconditional worship of their leader and their exclusivist attitude" -"the belief [by members or the leader themself] that the leader can do no wrong"-elevating leaders and their teachings to a faultless or "inspired" status- shutting down criticism of the leader, their writings.
