Science fiction is a genre encompassing imaginative works that take place in this world or that of the author's creation where anything is possible. The only rules are those set forth by the author. The speculative nature of the genre inspires thought and plants seeds that have led to advances in science. The genre can spark an interest in the sciences and is cited as the impetus for the career choice of many scientists. It is a playing field to explore social perspectives, predictions of the future, and engage in adventures unbound into the richness of the human mind. - Summary by A. Gramour

Author Frank J. Adkins, a lecturer at Cambridge University, arranged a series of European history lectures at the beginning of World War I for war-related organizations in the Sheffield area. Adkins expanded those lectures into long essays for publication as a book in 1915. The essays examine several centuries of history of Germany, France, England, and the Slavs, and they show how these histories contributed to the conflict that broke out in 1914. - Summary by Ted Lienhart

Detective Lieutenant Stephen Mayhew has been heard to complain that the murder of the Sticklemann woman was the damnedest case that he ever met up with; that it got progressively worse as it dragged along; and that it set him at such insane tasks as pulling hairs out of Miss Rachel's wealthy cat and forcing a timid fat woman to scream. Samantha, the cat to whom a fortune had been left, was very much the center of the whole story, from the moment when she brought in to Miss Rachel some delicious-looking raw meat, with glistening poison crystals on it, through to the time when she saw murder committed, but remained shining black when the whole tiny room was made a red shambles. As for Miss Rachel herself: there was shock and grief, and a time when the cold fingers of death had almost clutched her. But at only one time was she really desperately afraid. Dolores Hitchens introduces the three characters who make of this book an excellent story packed with suspense, excitement and mystery. - Summary by original book cover

This book about books was written by Harry Lyman Koopman, who served as the head librarian for Brown University from 1893 to 1930. Published in 1917, the volume is dedicated 'To the authors and their printers who have given us the books that we love.'A collection of essays about many different aspects of books, Koopman describes it this way in the preface: 'The following chapters were written during a series of years as one aspect after another of the Book engaged the writer's attention. As they are now brought together, the result is not a systematic treatise, but rather a succession of views of one many-sided subject.'Any booklover will enjoy browsing this wide variety of essays that range from a discussion of the value and privilege of reading, to spelling reform, to aspects of the book as a physical object and a work of art. - Summary by Verla Viera

The title poem was inspired by various images which Browning saw while living in Italy, an old tower in the Carrara Mountains, a painting in Paris and a horse on a tapestry in his home near Florence. These called to his mind the line from Shakespeare's King Lear spoken by Edgar in his feigned madness 'Childe Roland to the dark tower came'. The poem, full of surreal imagery, evokes the worlds of the 11th century epic poem 'The Song of Roland' and of the Arthurian Legends with their notion of the 'quest', a journey undertaken by a Knight into unknown hostile territory in search of a mysterious goal. - Summary by Alan Mapstone

PREFACEMY DEAR LADS,Until comparatively lately that portion of the United States in which I have laid this story was wholly unexplored. The marvellous canyons of the Colorado River extend through a country absolutely bare and waterless, and save the tales told by a few hunters or gold-seekers who, pressed by Indians, made the descent of some of them, but little was known regarding this region. It was not until 1869 that a thorough exploration of the canyons was made by a government expedition under the command of Major Powell. This expedition passed through the whole of the canyons, from those high up on the Green River to the point where the Colorado issues out on to the plains. Four years were occupied by the party in making a detailed survey of the course of the main river and its tributaries. These explorations took place some eight or nine years after the date of my story. The country in which the Big Wind River has its source, and the mountain chains contained in it, were almost unknown until, after the completion of the railway to California, the United States government was forced to send an expedition into it to punish the Indians for their raids upon settlers in the plains. For details of the geography and scenery I have relied upon the narrative of Mr. Baillie-Grohman, who paid several visits to the country in 1878 and the following years in quest of sport, and was the first white man to penetrate the recesses of the higher mountains. At that time the Indians had almost entirely deserted the country. For the details of the dangers and difficulties of the passage through the canyons I am indebted to the official report of Major Powell, published by the United States government.Yours sincerely,G. A. HENTY.

It deals primarily with American fiction, and as such, provides bibliographical information—publisher, date and place of publication for the first American edition. In the few exceptions where important English novels have been included, first English edition information is provided. Each title of the included 333 has its plot digested and discussed in wordage totaling between one hundred and one hundred and fifty words. An individual classification— one of the eight divisions which make up the entire field of Science-Fantasy-has been assigned to each title, and the possibilities of this division are explored in the work's introduction. - Summary by Inside cover of book

Genre(s): *Non-fiction
FOREWORD: In a former volume, the legend of Joséphine was considered, and an attempt was made to substitute for it the truth of History. In the presence of the legend of Marie-Louise, the object is the same. For more than a century the Austrian Archduchess has been an object of detestation in France, and of contempt throughout the world. But we must remember that Marie-Louise was a German by birth and race, and that her stay in France was too short to enable her to change her tastes and her sympathies. She always felt herself an exile and a stranger in her adopted country. Except as the consort of Napoleon, Marie-Louise has no historical interest, and it is only in her relations with him that she will be considered. Our theme is the Austrian marriage and its effect on the Russian alliance: these two events determined the fate of Napoleon. - Summary by Celine Major

Volume III of this History of the Papacy opens with the Council of Basel in revolt against Pope Eugenius IV, who doggedly defends papal autonomy against the movement for church reform. Dominating this volume is Aeneus Sylvius Piccolomini, Pope Pius II. A world famous author, diplomat, and Renaissance humanist, he dies in Ancona, at the head of a failed crusade. Creighton writes of him, 'Weakness and strength are strangely blended; vanity and littleness mix with high purpose and far-reaching plans; but before the eyes of Pius II there floated fitfully a loftier ideal of Christendom than was visible to any of his contemporaries, and juster views than he was enabled to express in action.'Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.

Harper's Young People is an illustrated weekly publication for children that includes short stories, tales from history, natural history, poetry, puzzles, and other fun. This 40th issue of the serial was published on August 3rd, 1880. In this issue, 'The Moral Pirates' enter the Erie Canal and carefully pass the Whitewing through and trudge it around the canal's many locks; two American settler children are taken by Canadian Indians and live with them through one winter before they attempt a dangerous escape in the third part of 'Old Times in the Colonies'; and a boy visits Colorado's Rocky Mountains, decides to become a prospector, and purchases his own 'silver' mine for ten dollars in 'Tom Chester's Silver Mine'. Other highlights of this issue include accounts from India of feral children raised by wolves in 'Wolf-Children'; 'The Ship of the Desert', where we learn all about camels and their special adaptations that specially suit them to labor in the desert; and, the fourth part of 'The Story of the American Navy' which describes the dramatic back and forth of the battles in the Mediterranean in the war against Tripoli. This periodical was published by Harper & Brothers, known today for their publications Harper's Bazaar and Harper's Magazine. - Summary by Jill Engle

In December that year (1942), patrol flights taking off from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal and from the decks of U.S. fleet carriers in the waters around the Solomon Islands discovered the Japanese hard at work on a well-camouflaged airfield at Munda on the northern end of New Georgia. This new field posed a definite threat to the Allies still fighting to wrest Guadalcanal from the enemy. It had to be taken, or at the very least, neutralized. U.S. pilots also reported another field being completed on Kolombangara across the Kula Gulf from New Georgia. In response to these potential threats, Operation Toenails, landings in the New Georgia Islands in the Central Solomons with the capture of Munda as the primary objective, were planned, scheduled, and mounted. - Summary by Charles D. Gramour

Is it possible to break through the awful barrier—to glimpse through the Night-Curtain that screens and shrouds us from the Phantom-World?—if such there be. Can we know it? Can we by any possibility scan its secrets? Nor are we alone in propounding questions such as these; for every intelligent person, at some period or other, puts them to himself and neighbor, but, in the majority of cases, vainly. The writer hereof, like the great mass of people, has often propounded these queries, the result being a confirmed and indurated scepticism—which scepticism was, almost ruthlessly, swept away by the extraordinary series of events about to be recorded in these pages. - Summary by P. B. Randolph
