Kiana DochertyUltra-processed food is taking over the grocery store, and it’s not just junk food either. A new article suggests some of the issues with these foods come from the fact that they’re ‘predigested’ - and we’re all eating a lot more of it than we think.
We all already know that junk food and fast food is addictive and unhealthy for us, but ultra-processed food is causing a lot of problems with our health, our weight and more. This might be the reason why.
In this video we're going to cover the Levels of Processing as seen in the NOVA Classification, we'll illustrate the difference between food and ultra-processed food using an apple and an apple pie from Mcdonalds, we'll learn about starch slurries and how food manufacturers are breaking foods down to their molecular parts before reassembling them into whatever 'food' they can think of. We'll also take a look at one of the worst offenders, Pringles, and discuss the difference between potato chips and whatever this is.

Back with more Secret Eaters - and I can’t believe I haven’t made a video about this episode yet!
Is Katie the most in denial Secret Eater of all time??
Denial about overeating is a lot more common than you might think. Even though we see it all of the time on Secret Eaters - the truth is, we're all at least a little bit in denial about what we eat. We tend to over-report healthy foods and under-report unhealthy foods. It's our brain's way of protecting us from scary information such as "oh I'm eating too much".
Today's subject Katie, however, really exemplifies how badly we can be lying to ourselves about our true behavior. Katie claims she doesn't eat breakfast, lunch and only eats vegetables - but is found out to be eating nearly 3000 calories per day. Much of it comprised of mayonaise.

Most people who try to change their habits, their lifestyle, their lives - will fail. They'll go right back to the habits and behaviors they had before they made the change.
But some people do succeed. They go the distance. They make changes that stick for life.
Why? One thing is clear - people who succeed at sticking with lifestyle changes forever - FOR LIFE - do things differently.
Based on my research, my current theory is that they have 3 major differences:
1) They actually want the change 2) They enjoy the process 3) They become the change itself

I cannot tell you how many times in my life I've thought to myself “I DON’T EAT THAT MUCH WHY AM I GAINING WEIGHT” - and as we can see from the people on Secret Eaters - I am not alone.
And as someone who spent most of their life very overweight (I was justtt a little bit away from being considered CLASS 3 - formerly known as MORBIDLY OBESE...) - I think the overall message of the show is an important and comforting one if you’ve been struggling with your weight at all.
The message being… IF YOU’RE GAINING WEIGHT, YOU’RE EATING TOO MUCH.
It is INSANELY easy to underestimate how much we’re eating every single day. Even when we think we’re eating an extremely healthy diet, as proved by today’s subject.

We are all BUSY - and it can be hard to find the time to eat healthy food. Many scientists agree that eating more whole foods and eating less ultra-processed foods is the most simple way to describe a healthy diet. The biggest problem is that shopping for groceries, prepping ingredients and cooking healthy meals takes time and energy. This is such a big problem that Frito-Lay's Annual Snack Index outlines that Americans report having only 52 minutes per day to prepare and enjoy their meals. It's no wonder than so many of us are resorting to food delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats - or otherwise outsourcing our meals to take-out restaurants. Simply put - our brains love convenience - and nothing is more convenient than a hot meal delivered to your door.
Today - through the lens of behavior change science - we're going to go over 8 tips that you can start using today to eat healthy with a busy lifestyle. So if you're sick of McDonald's and frozen pizza - this video is for you. Let's put the odds in your favor so that you can find time in your busy schedule for more nutritious and healthy meals. None of my tips include anything about MEAL PREP - not because I have anything against it but because I don't like reheating meals a week late. We'll focus on meal planning - and using behavioral hacks to make healthy eating easier.
So here are 8 behavioral science tips to help you eat healthy, even when you're busy. We'll mainly focus on healthy dinners - but these tips apply to any meal!

For months, I've gotten comments about the "carnivore diet". Could it really be true that vegetables are bad for us and a meat-only diet is the only true way to eat? Could the carnivore diet really be the optimal way to eat for human health?
Considering what we know about nutrition science and the food industry, I really was open to the idea of eating the "carnivore" way. There are some crazy stories about the success of the carnivore diet really helping people improve their health, such as Mikhaila Peterson and others suffering from auto-immune disorders and/or severe food allergies. Mikahila says she was having adverse reactions to lettuce, to give you an idea.
Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when you go to TikTok. TikTok Carnivores really make it hard to take the carnivore diet seriously. What's with all the butter? The episode "Addicted to Cheesy Potatoes" with Kelly has to be one of the most iconic ...and best examples of how bad this show and it's "experts" can really be.
Featuring Dr Mike Dow and J.J. Virgin, Freaky Eaters is supposed to be an unflinching look at the most unusual and extreme eating habits, digging into the struggles of people living with strange food addictions and the dire health consequences they face.
But in reality - Freaky Eaters was over-the-top, generally unhelpful and felt like the only thing they cared about were TV views. The conduct of their experts is questionable and the "therapy" they treat their patients with on the show is absolutely insane. Let's dive in.

From sugary cereal to Pop-Tarts - American breakfast food has been getting worse every year. I think I know why. When it comes to our morning meal, convenience is what matters most. Fast food companies like McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell and Wendy's are fighting for their share of the emerging breakfast market while our culture of convenience continues to grow. I went into this movie expecting to cry - but instead I was pretty disappointed. What's more - the backlash that this film received, specifically from sects of the fat activism community, was absolutely wild.
Is The Whale a body horror movie? Was this a grotesque display of obesity in a negative light? Or was it a really great movie with a lot of deep meaning? My review may surprise you.
This is more of a rant than it is a regular video of mine - so I hope you enjoy my views on The Whale, the food environment we're living in, how the food industry plays a big part of this and of course, my reaction to some of the most unhinged takes of mainstream media reviewers.
Some highlights from this video include my lukewarm response to The Whale, ranting about Fat Suits, talking about food ordering apps (Uber Eats, Door Dash, etc) and the hostile food environment, ranting about the food industry and of course, ranting about the fat acceptance backlash to The Whale.
Buckle up - this will be a long one.

We're discussing Nathalie, Sue and Laura from the TV Show Secret Eaters. On this British health TV series, Anna Richardson and her team of private investigators uncover the truth about people’s “secret eating” behaviour. So often on this show, the secret eaters are simply in denial or deceiving themselves about what they’re REALLY eating.
We’ll discuss more about denial, self-deception and how they come between us and accomplishing our weight loss (or other) goals.

In Season 4 of Netflix's dating reality TV show Love is Blind, Micah Lussier and Irina Solomonova were accused by the internet of being "mean girls". Many considered Irina and Micah to be bullies and unnecessarily aggressive.
It made me curious, what is really behind this mean girl phenomenon? We've all experienced this mean girl behaviour in our lives, mostly in middle and high school - so it was really interesting to see Micah and Irina, adult women, acting like high school mean girls a la Regina George and Gretchen Wiener.
We'll discuss the psychological phenomenon of "mean girl syndrome" and how mean girls use indirect aggression and social manipulation to increase their own status, at the expense of their victim's self-esteem and social value.
We'll look at Irina and Micah from Love is Blind, the movie Mean Girls and talk about the book "Queen Bees and Wannabes" by Rosalind Wiseman.

We all know Lunchables - but should this ultra-processed food be served to kids in school? The US federal government has approved Lunchables as nutritious enough to be served in schools across America, either purchased by students or given for free by school districts as part of the National School Lunch Program.
With this deal, Kraft-Heinz's reformulated Lunchables are set to become a staple in cafeterias around the country. Is this okay? Is this really the best we can do for the kids? Fat camp - sometimes know as a weight loss retreat, fat farm or summer camp for fitness - but whatever you call it - one thing is the same. These are camps specifically designed for overweight children to lose weight. The methods that fat camps use are controversial - from too extreme to perhaps too lenient.
We'll take a look at several fat camp documentaries, talk about the stories of several fat kids, look at what a fat camp weight loss journey looks like, as well as enjoy some footage from the movie Heavyweights.

This video answers “What did McDonald’s do after Super Size Me”. It tells the strange story of John Cisna, a science teacher from Iowa who lost weight on his “McDiet” and convinced the teens in his high school that McDonald’s fast food wasn’t as bad as they thought.
We discuss “540 Meals” - the controversial documentary created by McDonald’s and John Cisna, and sent to middle schools and high schools across America - and unravel a 20 year old mystery in the process.
When Super Size Me came out - McDonald’s took out ads in Australia and the UK telling people not to see the film. It backfired. So in America - they seemingly didn’t react at all. Other than ending their Super Size program the very same year…
This video investigates whether that’s all McDonald’s did in America, or if McDonald’s simply decided to conceal their reaction to Super Size Me from the public - and try a sneakier tactic instead…

In my video on the “Junk Food Kids”, we discussed who is to blame for childhood obesity. In that video I argued that the food industry held a part of the blame for the ongoing childhood obesity epidemic. However - in “Fast Food Baby” or Junk Food Babies - the parents are almost 100% to blame for their babies’ diets.

According to the medical documentary "Junk Food Kids: Who's To Blame" the parents are at fault for childhood obesity. But is that really fair? Can we really blame EVERYTHING on these bad parents? Or is there more to the story...
We're discussing the ethics of advertising fast food to kids, the childhood obesity epidemic, and how the food industry manipulates all of us into blaming only ourselves.
"Across Britain, the number of children with serious but entirely preventable health problems is spiraling. They eat too much. They don't clean their teeth. They never exercise. For the first time in centuries, many could die at a younger age than their parents. In Leeds, a quarter of all youngsters under the age of five have tooth decay and a third are obese."
